Thank you! Have given them a shout. Am I correct when I say the GC doesn't have a manual diff lock though? It seems bloody capable, but from what I could find, it seems to have a computer controlled electronic diff lock?

A Diesel Fortuner may fit the bill then. They are very capable and upgrade possibilities are endless.

To respond correctly to the first part of your comment, "offroad capabilities" would have to be defined.

The answer to the second part of your comment: You are mistaken .

    Also consider the XC90.

In that case is would be a huge mistake to take one for a test drive, it could be terminal.

From circa 1996 most 4x4s with diff locks had vacuum-activated lockers.

Most 4x4s after roughly 2015 (will have to check myself on this) all have e-lockers. Or also called computer-controlled servo actuated lockers.

    Some had torque-biased lockers.

VERY FEW had "manually activated" lockers. In fact, there is no such thing, as even ARB uses air pressure.

Keep your Duster its great , you have never got stuck so far why spend money in this time , any 4x4 you will get stuck its not the car but the driver , low range, your duster has a very low 1st gear almost low range , it has good clearance , it is light both on fuel (diesel) and for 4x4 with your tires is extremely capable , you will have to spend lots to get better

Sorry, what I meant was like on the older Pajero SWB, you had to manually engage diff-lock on the dash. But good to know RE the e-lockers!

More of case of wanting to upgrade to something more comfortable as well. Old Stoffel has served me well, but I want a bit more refinement in my off-roader now

Its looking like the shortlist is now:

    Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
    Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Pajero Sport
    Everest
    Fortuner

Still considering the Ranger, but will keep forum's comments in mind RE maintenance...

Work college son in charge of 72 ldv’s , between the Mitsubishi,Hilux and Ranger after 3 years Ranger’s running cost was the least.

Personally would keep the Duster none of the upgrades suggested come close to fuel consumption.

That will certainly be the biggest pay-off. The Duster basically runs on air!

Just in case you wouldnt mind a bakkie I see there is a Fiat Fullback 2020 model available with 30000km on the clock and has super select auto on cars.co.za. The nice thing is you get a very new vehicle with the latest 2.4 Mitsubishi motor and its reliabilty at R400000. I cant see any bakkies competing at that price point if you dont mind the badge obviously.

The badge in this case means absolutely nothing. That is a Mitsubishi 100% through. All aftermarket parts as well as spares are all Mitsubishi. They have absolutely speed auto box. That motor gives about 7l/100km according to its computer while doing sani pass

I guess it depends on what they’re used for. Our work bakkies are on sites all the time, driving through the veld, bad gravel etc.
we have four hiluxs, and a fortuner, then we got three rangers to add to the fleet. The rangers lasted two or three years until they were totally fcked. I think they were eventually almost given away cos they were costing so much. The hiluxs and fortuner just keep on going, well over 300000kms on all of them. The fords made it just over 100000kms each.
