Default School me on car radio wiring

I was fixing my "new to me boat" radio today. All it required was a simple press of the reset button. However the radio located in such a position that it is impossible to see the display, so I removed the radio to check out the programming and settings, but cannot seem to power it. I remember this from my youth, 40 years ago being buggered around by the yellow wire.

So Black is ground and red goes to the ignition while the yellow goes to the car battery to power the backup so settings are not lost.

When I connect red and black to the battery .... no power to the radio. Must I connect the yellow and the red for testing purposes.

I don't believe so. I remember it being counterintuitive, the red and yellow wire.

In my experience red goes to battery and yellow to the ignition...yellow and red can be joined together as well but then the radio wont turn off with the ignition unless you switch it off yourself...

So a alarm battery at 11.9V was insufficient to power the radio. Stuck it on my deep cycle and she power up. The Yellow must be connected for the Red to have any effect.

Ok so I have power to the unit but the display has horizontal red lines through it. These were not there when on the boat. All I have connected it the power?

If it is an LCD display and it now has lines through it, it has most likely been dropped or received a blow.

The face was removed before removing the radio. No drops no knocks GRRR. I must have done something, I suppose not repairable.

Not LCD this funny thin lines that light up.

There is probably a ribbon cable connecting the face plate to he radio body. Check that it is properly inserted into the respective connectors at both ends.

I opened the removeable face, all is hard soldered onto the PCB so no chances of poor connecttion. Was a lot of flux residue at three points and I cleaned tht up in the hope that there was an issue. Still the red lines.

As stated I can barely see the faceplate with the radio in position so the display is actually not theta critical. It is however very irritating.

I think there is a problem with the USB connector, it does not connect my IPod nor does it show any charging of the Ipod. When the 3.5mm stereo jack is used to connect to the IPod is plays but does not charge hence the reason for the USB connection.

The bluetooth also fails to pair so if I cannot sort that and the USB out then new radio as I primarily listen to my songs off my IPod.

That’s not a lcd display, cannot remember the name it goes by, but very common none the less, those red lines are filaments of sorts they are supposed to be red, not sure if as red as your photo, but red is not wrong..

Often those displays will have a very dark covering such that you do not see those red lines..

edit - it’s called vacuum fluorescent display vfd, if the red is very bright, then in all probability the filaments are getting too much voltage, probably circuit damage on the power supply side..

    Hi Marco,

Ok that makes a lot of sense.

Had the radio apart completely and can see no visible signs of damage which makes it difficult for me to diagnose. If its fried I can replace it, I cannot find the half fried stuff, not my skill set. The circuit board was covered in glass fibre grinding dust, cleaned it off but still the same.

Might have another look over the weekend.
