    Default Hi guys....question on winches...

I drive a light weight Russian 4x4 and it only weigh around 1200kg...my question is...what is the proper capacity optimum size winch i should use...when laoded i dont think to exceed 1700kg's would a 2000 or 3000 or 4000 or even a 5000kg winch be good enough...?..don't wanna install a too big or too heavy winch for the car....

If you go double the vehicle's loaded weight, you will be ok.

So if i install a 3500pound capacity winch i will have sufficient pulling power.. ?......then the estimate is around 1600 kg pull power on a 1200 kg vehicle....or should i rather go for 4500 pound pull power that is just over 2000 kg pull capacity...?
I'm still new to this offroad thing so i ask before i do...

It seems the norm is at least 3 x the empty weight.

Runva is fine for leisure uese.

    Most manufactures recommend 1.5x

    In Africa we go 2x

I would check the mass of the winch and how much you think your suspension can take.

I had a want 8274, 8000lbs, but industrial and around 56kgs from memory. Really only any good on a land cruiser or series landrover. They are very heavy.

THen there is a the question of Synthetic rope vs steel cable. This can make a big difference to the total mass. Also remember that you will need to add a winch plate or some means of mounting which will also add a few kgs.

I would guess that a 6000lbs winch would be fine for your use and a snatch block will double that. Remember the winches are rated on the first layer of the drum and loose capacity quickly as they wind more line on. The snatch block lets you get more line out and halves the speed but doubles the pulling force.

I don't think many people have had issues with Runva, but I would check if you can get spares before you commit. I purchased comeup and I know they carry spares locally.

3x for hilux, not that hard core 9000lb

1.5x for a daily drive in a City

But 2x might not be too bad, just use snatch block that you can double the pulling force, if needed

    1200kg x 2 = 2400kg = 5291lbs

I (personally) would probably go for a 6000lbs

I'm driving this and it has center diff lock so dont think more than 5000 pound winch is necessary...I'm not planning on getting a Land Cruiser unstuck....

Snatch block will double or triple your pulling power. Read up a bit on that and do your sums.

Actually John, I feel like I owe you an apology. I was being a little b### and my comment was uncalled for.

    I'm sorry.
