Wait a minute..... I thought ppm is the sulphur content. You can just as well get contaminated 10 ppm diesel as you can get squeaky clean 500ppm.

We have instruments at Natref, Engen and Sasol where we test the diesel in different stages for metals etc. Sasol diesel is a really well tested and excellent product. Caltex is sent to an external lab for testing and comes out with excellent results. Engen is variable but this has been related to the Durban refinery. Sasol has by far the largest R&D labs in Africa with excellent Chemists and Engineers. Nobody else has.

I put in Caltex and Sasol as a general rule.

Off topic but we also test dairy products and the one big brand I dont purchase is Parmalat.

Yea, I should probably have said environmental cleanliness (sulphur is a major contributor to air pollution). Knew I should've edited it

This is quite interesting, particularly the corrosion section. https://axi-international.com/ultra-...r-diesel-ulsd/

Diesel at the Agris are usually cheaper. Do they use any specific brand? I am no expert here.
Locally I drive past one branded garage to get to the Sasol one.

I am not qualified to technically comment as to which diesel is best.
What I can say is that the additive that Engen adds in winter ( gell type stuff) clogged the diesel filter on the 200 Toyota I had on a regular basis.
My service manager at a very busy Toyota dealership rated Shell the best diesel. So different service manager opinions.

This is a very informative thread.

I don’t want to highjack the thread, but I see there are a few experts (worked at refineries etc.) that commented.

Would the same people please share their opinion about Petrol Unleaded 95, which is the best brand to go for, SASOL, ENGEN?

I'm midway between two Sasol stations. Amazing the price difference even between them. I try to only use Sasol diesel.

Sasol Dastek is probably one of the cheapest in Pta, there's one a bit further down the road not sure how much they are per liter.

    Quite simple for me
    1. The cheapest one
    2. failing that the closest one

Despite having done several hundred thousand km in various diesel powered vehicles I have never experienced any significant deviation in consumption that cannot be explained by driving style and/or conditions

Quite correct. Last time I checked (maybe 2 years ago) the Sasol close to Cradock ave was 40c per liter more expensive.

Depends if filters changed, any work or adjustment on diesel pump, injectors ......

My Duster is supposed to take 50ppm.

I used Sasol 10ppm for awhile to travel to Lesotho and back and averaged 13.8 to 14.8 Km/l. But mainly used Sasol as it was around the corner and cheapest.

I now use BP 50ppm and average 15.5 to 16.5 km/l per trip. Similar speed and same route.

    Going to try Engen next...
