    Stating the obvious ---

The key here is that the device recovers the energy left in the flat (almost) battery and uses it, with the aid of "DC-DC converters", to store that energy in capacitors at a voltage we can use.

The recovered energy is then released in a short burst to start the motor. So basically it is doing a time and voltage compression/conversion.

Very useful for somebody who experiences frequent "no starts" from an aging battery or not so good charging system.

Not so useful if you flatten the battery 100% with a load like lights or a fan or radio etc.
Even then, if there is another car nearby you can steal a minute or two and you are on your way.

I would "like" the Capacitor version, but if I only had one, it would be the Lithium one.

Just this last week I gave my one to my brother-in-law for a stranded Chevy Spark in his garden, and it worked first time. OK that is a tiny car, but the battery had been in my boot for 3 years unused or charged.

    ----------------------------

For a used car dealer the Capacitor version is like manna from heaven for his car lot.

    Hey ĎFluffyí;

once again I appreciate your valuable input here. I do have one these gadgets I bought in the uSA and although I havenít needed to use it yet, I have full confidence it will work as required, especially for my 1.5L Duster. Bought at Canadian Tire the spec say it will confidentally fire up a V6 Diesel engine so my little toy soft roader Duster shouldnít be too much of a challenge.

I don't know if it should or should not - my knowledge of electrickery is not good enough.

Hwever, a mate and I went to Adendorff together some time last year, and bought the same model.
He kept his permanently plugged in; I have a reminder that goes off every three months to take out of the car for a check and top-up if needed.
Mine is still going fine. His is dead and needs replacing.

OK I bought one of these battery jumpers from our local battery supplier some months back. Today one of our municipality bakkies had a flat battery. So I told staff not to jump start as I wanted to try the portable thingymabob out.

Connected it up and just started the bakkie, a few cranks and vehicle started. I'm very impressed.

At first I was concerned about the cable thickness (high amps when cranking over), but at the duty cycle it should not be an issue.
Wonder of the newer city vehicles (which turn off at the traffic lights) uses similar technology to save the old skool battery? It not, it would make a lot of sense it if did.
By bypassing the dead battery you should get a tab better cranking performance. (very nice comparison video)
The beauty is that you don't need to have them charged all the time, simple charge from the drained battery.
At double the price of a decent set of jumper cables - I will be getting one when my current jumpers get used for wiring in the off-grid system in the house.

I have the Romoss unit from Takealot. It works 100%. Started my son's BMW diesel car on more than 1 occasion with it . Will never travel without it, especially when you own an automatic car which you cannot push start.

I got mine from the manufacturer in US. It’s this one. It has boosted my 12V 12HT in my land Cruiser almost a dozen times on a trip before I was able to get a new battery and more importantly recharge the booster itself. They work amazingly well.
WORD OF CAUTION: Remove the booster immediately after vehicle starts! These batteries are not designed to accept charge from the boosted vehicle, they will be damaged and might very well explode. I had a friend who is very mechanically inclined and didn’t read the instructions. After a couple of minutes he touched the charger, it was Hot, so he unclipped it and threw it on the ground. It exploded as it hit the ground. I don’t know what brand this was in this incident.

Now that everyone has ordered or bought one for their own use, it will gather dust as your vehicles battery will not go flat.... until the jump starter goes flat or you lend it out

Honestly, throwing an antigravity device to the ground is just looking for trouble. Hell it's almost as dangerous as shining a light into a black hole.

For what it's worth, I have also got the Yellow Romoss unit and have used it quite a few times. Once with my Hilux battery on 0V! (Don't ask - left the interior light on!!)

It can easily start a few cars (or one car multiple times!) before needing a recharge.

My wife even used it with no training when her car let her down at work.

    Brilliant little gadget! Love it!

    It lives in the car...
