    Default Knock when cold

Soooo, this is annoying but when it's very cold and I first start the car I get a knocking sound. If I get the revs up to 1000 it goes, and after 2min it's gone completely. No smoke etc, drives great. But the time I reach my first stop street it's gone.

Any ideas if it's just desiel knock? I can almost feel it through floorboards.

It's going on Thursday for a checkup.

Also only does it 1 in 5 starts, and only in morning, never rest of the day.

My bakkie was similar until it was serviced and the oil replaced.

Change oil to correct viscosity. Oil cold and hasn't reached the tappit rockers. Maybe oil pump tired. Get tappits reset as a start. During day time oil gets warm from ambient temp etc. Not an expert but what I experienced, let an expert advice further.

Just changed the oil for my trip. It hasn't even done 100km yet.

Oil pump is new and engine was completely overhauled less than 5000km ago.

I am using Shell H5 for Desiel.

So you are right about the oil viscosity. I used Shell Helix 15w 40 as that's what my mechy said.

This is what the book recommends. Can someone make sense of it for me? Should it be 10w 40?

I bloody hope not. They have been back 3 times since I had the refurbished.

I think if it was it would continue everytime the revs drop to idle.

Warm day today, and I started the car and no noise. I think it's cold oil.

I have an extremely limited knowledge of oils, but, I would go for the 10w40. seems your current oil isnt managing in the cold.
If its just been replaced, I would just drain the oil and put the different oil in, wouldn't bother with changing the filter again.

diesel fuel isn't what it used to be.

Modern diesel fuel is designed for modern diesel engines. The old diesels don't like the thinner new diesel fuel with different cetane numbers.

Try a different brand or try some 500ml 2so in the fuel tank. (Please debate 2so elsewhere - it's just a recommendation - use it or don't use it)

    Thanks guys.

I just put in some 2SO, I happen to be a big fan of it.

Was thinking of going to Shell Helix H7, I have always used Shell but for no particular reason.

Any suggestions of what to try instead, please don't say liquid Milley..... It's to rare and pricey

Also a big fan of Shell oil. The HX7 is very good and being synthetic it might solve your problem

May be a wrong suggestion but when I was young engines just overhauled were run in with a non multi grade for 3000km. I don't think it is cold enough to warrant a 5W, 10W or even a 15W oil. SAE30 is cheap to try.
Changing the oil is a cheap solution. As it can be felt on the floor board I would think it comes from the lower part of the engine.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Changed the oil to Shell Helix H7.

Running very smooth, will have to see about the knock over next few days.

The oil is so clean in the car after 3 oils changes in less than 10 000km I could hardly see it on dip stick.

I changed the oil filter again also as went to synthetic oil and didn't want to mix.

I'm under correction but I'm sure in the old days that mechanics etc would change summer oils, being thicker in viscosity, to winter oils being less in viscosity. Today's oils are improved to offer a wider range from cold to hot.

Pronounced diesel knock when cold is normal

The engine management system advances the injection timing to allow more time for complete combustion to avoid smokey startups on cold mornings.

Would be surprised if a change in oil made any difference under the exact same same ambient conditions in terms of diesel startup knock ( .....not talking about hydraulic valve lifters etc. )

Mechanic said something similar along those lines.

Car just had a check before my trip, was told not to worry.

So back from my trip. The knock is getting worse, happens everyday now after about 2min of driving.

I found out today that it only happens when I have the clutch engaged, as soon as I take my foot of clutch it goes away.

    Thinking a bearing or something....

Still goes away once everything is warm and won't come back till following day when its cold. Also will go away completely if the revs increase.

Clutch release bearing. How many kilos on the clutch?
    Or spigot bearing.
