    Hi Petri,

It would be great if you could give a comparison between this and a regular bakkie like a ranger.

I am tossed between buying a Raptor or the v6 Amarok. I like the Raptor for its offroad ability but it feels very underpowered at 120km/h, I am concerned overtaking might be an issue.

The Amarok has plenty of power but lacks the offroad ability.

Final question: Is it (amarok) really as comfortable as an SUV?

Really depends on what type of offroading you do. Andre de Villiers does some really nice days and courses to show people what they can do. Each to their own with that though.

To answer your comfort question IMO, direct comparison with the in laws vehicles, Touareg and v6 Amarok. YES, yes they are.

Having had an Amarok and now a Touareg, I can say the Amarok comes close, but is no match for the air suspension in the Touareg. But as a double cab, it set new standards in comfort!!

Boring answer........Depends on the tool you want for the Job.

I dont think the Rok is the quintessential 4x4 Tool in a Double Cab - I just dont.

BUT its pretty damn close to what we accept/feel capable DC 4X4's are (I'm talking standard form here only).......Lets say the Lux, Isuzu, Ford, Triton, etc etc etc (by the way I think the Triton is the best in standard form WRO capability).

Question is - do you REALLY need that (say) 5% extra capability?? Even 10%?? How often do you actually REALLY come across that wild axle twister, or hectic rock crawling?

The V6 Rok is THE NEAREST TO A CAR/SUV that you can get in terms of space/comfort/safety/etc etc and everyone agrees on that.

And that gearbox is just out of this world..........

For me (and no I'm not trying to sell this one, I'm giving my TOTALLY unbiased opinion).......Raptor vs Rok V6??

For what I want to use it for??

Rok V6, by a VERRRRRRY long shot

Thanks for the feedback. you got me thinking ....

I have a Navara D40 2.5 D/C - its an absolute beauty to drive but its a 4x2 and manual so driving in traffic is a bit of pain at times.

I tend to leave it at home and use the Disco when going out to the beach or launch the boat, etc which I think a 4x4 double cab would be better suited especially to through all the sandy stuff in. The other reason I was considering a change is that the Navara does not feel as safe driving at night compared to the disco for obvious reasons. so when I travel for work I gravitate to the disco and the result is that the Navara is now relegated to very menial jobs and rarely does a 1000km in a month.

So in summary or hindsight - my offroad needs are not priority, the long distance on road comfort with the ability to go to the beach and not get stuck are more important.

I might give you a call

Ja.........look, the old sums apply here.........have a NICE car 90+ % of the time to use during the year to get to 90% of offroad driving, or have a full blast 4x4 to get that 100% capability in offroad ........ BUT during the rest of the year you only use 10% of that capability.

I've seen Guys rigging/kitting/lifting that 4x4 up to the hilt, Guys staying in a city. Nice, but not NEARLY the car he needs to drive for that 2/3 week long real 4x4 usage every year.

The Guys with the "year round", easy driving 4x4 just seem 100 times happier.

Do you want to get to that 4x4 vanue (Lets say 3 Provinces) in a NICE, cruising, light on fuel, no frills 4x4 vehicle, but maybe not do those "extra" trails on the trail, or do you really REALLY want to go all out, bonkers, and be stuck with this heavy 4x4 JUST for that "extra" trails........??

    Dunno, just my opinion.

My choice?? The All Rounder (get there in comfort, no issues, just lekker).........not the clumsy, top heavy 4x4 with all the extras for that "in case" that you not gonna use anyway - ever.

As ek weer manual koop - Hilux 2,8.

    Auto - Amarok V6.

Ek praat hier obviously STANDARD spec.

By the way - 'n curveball......sommige "perceived capable" DC 4x4's is NIE so capable nie, en actually nogal 'n disappointment......en ek praat 1st hand experience hier.

Weereens - 'n goeie, experienced driver sou my Hilux BAIE verder laat gaan het. Maar ook meeste van die "res".

Question is, do you buy this or a new FJ Cruiser?

    Prices not too far apart.
