I spoke to the local Ford dealer and discussed the LR story and they were very willing to take over the LR dealership. I then went into a lengthy discussion/ negotiation with LRSA, mentioning that I was speaking on behalf of a number of LR owners in the area. Although very polite in their responses, they were not willing to budge.

The result was that me and three other LR owners changed to Toyota in a matter of a year or so. It was not something we discussed to do in retaliation, it just made sense and it naturally happened that way. So yeah, proximity of a dealership does matter, especially in a more rural setting.
Definitely makes sense in that scenario.

For a property it is location, location, location...
For a 4x4 it is reliability, reliability, reliability...
No electronics, no turbo, mechanical pumps, solid axles, big wheels and bigger tyres...

If you want to use it for what you buy it for - ie go to places a normal car cannot take you there is only 2 non negotiables:

1.) Reliability (New cars widen your range but when you buy a 4x4 with higher mileage the choice narrows down to two - three makes)
2.) Low range (not used often but you will miss it when you need it)

I'm yet to see a vehicle with centre diff and low range, without having a centre diff lock.... But yes... It should absolutely have a centre diff lock as well...

    PS:

Looking at my list... There is only ONE vehicle in SA that matches my 3 point criteria

If your use is as a trail vehicle, reliability is of far less importance. But for a lot of people, trail riding is not contrary to your opening statement.

I also believe that there are many more than just three makes which are reliable enough (even for overlanding) if sufficient maintenance is done. Would be interesting to hear what three makes you consider suitable though.

    YES This!
If you lock it and walk away and you don't look back, you've bought the wrong car

If you are buying new, then yes within a specific price class all cars will be more or less the same these days.

VERY different if I compare a R500 000 Merc ML from say 2014 to a R500 000 VW T-Rok from 2021. I know which one I want to be in in the event of a crash - particularly a high speed one.

Toys for boys must firstly look cool and then present hidden tricks to impress even further. In my case, drving a tank which makes tank noises gives me pleasure.
These factors are totally up to the discretion of the owner.

Practicality, safety, engine performance, luxury features, etc are optional extras added to bolster the reasoning for ownership to Swambo, or anyone else.
