Default Samsung tablet for google maps whilst driving

    Hi Chaps

I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my factory radio in my 2016 Fortuner so I have the navigation function.....but at 8k upwards its madness.

All I really need is google maps, I have a tablet already. Is there anyway to link this up to my Samsung phone for instance or even have it as a stand alone device for traveling. Relying on my wife to follow the blue line on a cellphone is driving me mad slowly but surely

Also open to any other navigation options that wont break the bank.

    Thanks

Not sure where you want to link the tablet too, but yes you can easily use the tablet for Google maps, similar to the phone. There are some other map products also that can be used on the tablet with downloadable maps. Even a T4A app. I wouldn't upgrade the OEM navigation system at all. Actually, the latest Ford Rangers don't even have navigation in by default. The world is moving to Android Auto and the likes.

You don't say if you have the wifi only or wifi/3g tablet.

But if you want to use the tablet and it's wifi only, you have a couple of options:

    1. Before hitting the road, connect the tablet to your home wifi, and download offline google maps for the area you want to visit. The tablet can then work offline with Google maps.

    2. Create a hotspot on your phone and connect the tablet wifi to it for online google maps while on the go.

    3. Buy a data sim (if you have a 3g version) and pop it into the tablet.

    Thanks for the advice guys!

I have ordered two magnetic cell phone holders to support the tablet....seems the guys overseas use this method to support tablets and ipads etc. ... https://www.takealot.com/magnetic-ca...d/PLID71289212

My tablet is a 3g version, so perhaps looking for a basic pay as you go sim data card would be best....not sure how much data the likes of Google maps etc use?

I plan on mounting it low down, close to the charging cigarette lighter point.....ideally id like to keep it permanently plugged in, not sure if this will drain the battery over time or if these points work when the ignition is on only?

Thanks again guys, its all coming together at a fraction of the cost of a new head unit.

I use Sygic which is free and doesn't require data for around town...and T4A for the more rugged trips.

I ran some tests last night with the tablet in the vehicle. I have set up my cell phone as a hot spot so that the tablet will link to it when i get into the vehicle, google maps etc will work correctly and run off my cell data. I also plugged a charger into the usb port and this charges the tablet whilst the ignition is on only. When the ignition is off it does not show that it is providing charge.....i wonder though if this could slowly drain the battery if it was permanently plugged in whilst the ignition is off?

Next i am waiting for the magnetic tablet holders to arrive so i can mount the unit. It looks identical to the factory radio so i am doubtful it will attract any wondering eyes or hands...

I now need to figure out a way for the tablet to turn itself on as soon as the ignition is turned on and to have google maps as the default that opens immediately.....?

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Install one of the offline navigation apps. You get to download your country map. No need for a data connection while driving.

E.g. Maps.me, OsmAnd, Here WeGo, CoPilot GPS, Sygic and many more.

They all use OpenStreetMap. Always up to date maps.

This is a recipe for divorce.

Why do you need it in the tablet? Would your phone not work better?

I have a phone cradle mounted on the right hand side of the steering wheel behind the A piller, and it works great. Ran a power cable to it so it can charge while driving. And just unclip the phone when not in use.

Also keeps the clutter away from the centre console and the eyeline is closer to the road. I can't stand stuff mounted on the middle dashboard, blocks my view.

    Sort of like this.

Thanks guys, this is all really helpful info. Especially about the offline apps!

We tried the phone thing, i was looking for a bigger option. Will send some pics when its mounted, so far it looks pretty factory....oddly enough the black tablet blends into the rest of the center console nicely.

The "traffic" option on Google Map also does the same, showing speed traps, heavy road congestion (red sections), etc.

I personally prefer to stay/use Google apps as it is easier to sync data across, for example, mark favourite holiday or food places, and it will show up on the map. It tracks your travel behaviour and it will, in future, recommend best routes, based on its AI algorithm.

Google Maps also support/offer offline maps.

Also save a lot of effort in remembering one password for all Google apps, as opposed to multitude passwords for other non-Google apps.

This is only achievable if the tablet has been rooted as far as I know and with some editing of system files.

There are apps for this in the Google Play Store.

Looks nice but I am bit worried that it is way too far below for viewing purposes, getting your eyes off the road?

How about having a nice, secondhand smartphone and put it on the dashboard or front screen (next to the pillar)? That way you can easily watch the road and the map.

    Good idea!

I am traveling up to Matroosberg this weekend so will give it a spin and let you know. After testing it this weekend it seems to not distract you any more than looking at the normal radio screen for a second...so far it works perfectly but could always be relocated with the phone magnets i ordered, they stick really well too.

So you have Google maps and a Samsung phone which tells you which way to to turn through the phone's speaker. No need to take your eyes off the road or hope that someone can see the blue line properly. Why do you need a tablet?
