Default Zimbabwe border posts open for tourists?

We want to do a Trip from Namibia to Zimbabwe in August 2021. Are the borders open for tourists? Are fuel always available in most of the towns?

Only open for commercial traffic. Tourist borders are open via airports but not by car.

Depending on what you want to do in zim, you could travel overland via the caprivi to Kasane, then fly to Vic falls and do a couple days there with tour operators (lots of very good SADC specials at the moment), then fly back to Kasane and collect your vehicle.

mack air and wilderness air are doing daily flights between Kasane and Vic falls

I read on FB it is quite easy to get a permission from Zim immigration to enter with vehicle. You need confirmed booking. Check DriveZim group for contact numbers and email.

Zimbabwe authorities have just announced a two-week localized lockdown for Hurungwe and Kariba districts in Mashonaland West Province following a spike in COVID-19 infections.
So for now, Lake Kariba and Mana Pools are off the limits, I guess.

I am planning to arrive in VFA airport and cross the border to Kasane on feet to collect vehicles there and drive to Zambia immediatelly on KAZA visa. It makes me worried now. Kasane and Livingstone are a lot more expensive for flights from Europe. But you never know what can happen in a few weeks in Covid times. There might be a peak in Botswana and Zambia as well.

We are in the process of attempting to roll over our Zimbabwe trip for a year, due mid-July 2021. Receipt of email acknowledged but no confirmation yet of rollover (or even refund).

You'll never get a refund out of Zimparks, Stan. Simply a lack of funds. At best you may get a rollover, best of luck.

Which part might not be true? The first one, about the lockdown of mentioned two districts? That one certainly is true. http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/afr...1310004797.htm

The second one, about tourist visits to Lake Kariba and Manapools? Yes, that one was merely my speculation, as I couldn't find any info on how this localized lockdown actually affects tourists. Glad to hear that Mana is still accessible, as I haven't year completely abandoned hopes on our trip in August.

Are the land borders of Zim open for exit? I plan to land in VFA, buy KAZA Univisa, go by taxi to Kasane, collect the vehicles and enter Zambia via New bridge. Everything on 72h PCR test from home and EU Covid passport. Is it possible to do it like that?

No, land borders are closed for both entry and exit except for commercial traffic. Only option from Vic Falls to Kasane is Mack Air at the moment

    Dears,

Sorry for the late reaction on that post, but we just come back from Namibia. We had a blast for 2 weeks in Namibia and entered BW without problems, just the regular PCR test, taken in Windhoek and received via email enroute. BW is testing again at the port of entry, very nicely done, the good „Abbott“ test kit, nurses very professional - sponsored by the government, not like we in Europe, with our cheap China crap.

After a few days in Chobe area (3 cars in Chobe NP in one day, Leopards on the pads, amazing….!!!!) we decided to give it a try and drove to the ZIM border post in Kazungula. Due to the fact, that we had a rental car, we were considered commerical traffic…..Since they sold us a CVG and we had to pay 50 USD extra there wasn’t even a discussion. Usually I always swear at ZIM borders because of the useless CVG for ripping of the tourists, but this time….well, Hwange NP for a few days, no tourists, Vic Falls and Binga nearly empty – what an experience. Food and Diesel readily available, ZAR/ USD preferred. No probs on leaving ZIM on the same route, unfortunately Panda border still closed. The BW guys had a good laugh with our commercial story, but we had a blast.

We planned to do it like this in SEP 2021 again, NAM-BW-ZIM, but since the new quarantine regulation for ZIM is in place since today….so NAM and BW will also do it and saved 3000 NAD for the cross border permit for ZIM:-)

    All the best,

Quite helpful , thx! We are actually flying into Zim in a few days time. We have a 4x4 rented for HWange for a few days 10 days after we arrive in Bulawayo. Do you think after our 10 days is up (we're staying with a local organization) we'll be able to drive as tourists to Hwange and Gonarezou? It sounds like you are nixing Zim from your next trip due to to the quarrantine requirement. I can't honestly tell if the intercity travel includes tourists or not. Aany knowledge on that front? Goodness that sounds lovely to be there with so few tourists and no problem finding gas - which is always stressful for us. Sad for the country though.

    Thanks for any advice!

Just recently I've seen on Facebook that tourists can travel freely around the country. Intercity travel ban does not apply to them. It was published by Ant from manapools.com in Harare, so from someone who really is in the know.

Nevertheless, we just had to cancel our trip to Zim, which was due in four weeks. Our country (as most of the Europe) has put all of the southern Africa countries, including Zimbabwe, on the list of countries where 10 days quarantine is mandatory upon return from. And we simply cannot afford this.

Now looking to quickly organize the alternate African trip. However, the choices are very limited. Currently, only Kenya and Uganda are on the list where quarantine is not mandatory.

Just liaised with our friends in ZIM. At the moment it is still possible to drive around the country as a tourist, but you need to have booking confirmations or similar paperwork with you. But since you fly in in the near future, that new entry restrictions for travellers from certain virus variant affected countries are now strictly enforced - self quaranting for 10 days and 4 tests within that period......ZIM at its best again:-), all expenses for testing are for your account and nobody knows whether only PCR tests or also RAT are accepted...

The whole regulations are now also enforced by the army, in support of ZRP.

Looks like every prediciton/advice for the near future is like gambling at the casino, since, like usual in ZIM, changes might be in place within a few minutes.

We're still sticking to the NAM/BW plan for SEP 2021, but this time not even thinking about crossing into ZIM, but already considering to reroute the DEC/JAN trip to ZA/MOZ/ZIM to somewhere else.

What a shame, that this China Virus is still affecting the whole plans for future trips and we really wish, that this crap is going back to where it was coming from:-)

Anyway, give it a try and make the best out of your ZIM trip!!

Well looks like we'll be going to the casino folks in about a days time so we are ready to roll the dice and see what happens.. perhaps we"ll roll snake eyes and be blessed with minimum hassle.. perhaps we will end up in a government run hotel and a large bill... we are as prepared as we can be.. if I get internet the next couple weeks I will try to post the outcome.. of course it is a moving target.. most worried about our gonarezhou trip that starts at end of month.. hopefully passage thru any local hotspots will be allowed.. sure to be an experience one way otr the other!

Thx all for your very valuable info!

I am sure you will be OK. You will have to be well prepared, but the most hassle comes from the airlines. The border posts and roadblocks were always breeze. I found out travelling in covid times be very rewarding and cannot not be repeated. West Papua, Sulawesi, Taiwan - March 2020, Tanzania January 2021, Namibia May 2021.
