When I read articles like that I always wonder how much of the tech/components in the bus made it into cars people ended up driving every day.

Very interesting ... a pity it was never commercialised.
However, just immagine what it would cost new today with all bells and whistles.
I remember the Kombi Syncro but I don't think they make them anymore.
    Are they off-road firendly?
I assume that they are not as beefed up as the prototype was.

We, as a family, had many thousands of fun kilometers in my T3 Syncro. Very capable. Pity they never came with a more powerful engine and stronger drive train.

Great article Dirk! I took these pics of it when I visited the VW Stiftung AutoMuseum in Wolfsburg back in 2015, but never knew the whole story behind it.

If you look at the specs it's basically what the Renault Duster 4x4 offers today.

Yes my Uncle had one not really a proper off roader , more for dirt roads and snow , from what I remember was slow , but did they not fit a better engine later on?

I would love that 4wd bay window. Heck, I would love owning a bay windows. Full stop.

That synchro Golf 2 has also always been a favourite of mine.

But of course the VW 4x4 link goes WAY back...not many people know that the original beetle was actually also produced during the war in a 4x4 format. The Type 166 Schwimmwagen was of course 4-wheel drive (of course even more interestingly 4x4 was only available in 1st gear up to 10km/h....) and at a point a Beetle body (or KDF-wagen it was known then) was placed on top of the Schwimmwagen chassis to produce the Type 87 Kommandeurswagen. Locking front and rear axles, and reduction portal gears at the rear.

Dirk Ellis did a small run of approved Synchro's after the official run from VW was done. That had the 2.5l motor in it. Friend of mine has one in absolutely immaculate condition. Can't remember exactly how many, but very few.

The most powerful factory fitted engine in SA was the 2.1. I had one of the Dirk Ellis models and they were fitted with the 2.0 high block Golf motors. Of the 2.5 varieties only a couple were made. We tried the 2.8 V6 Audi motor as well and it fitted like a glove but gearing had to be changed.

I beg to differ. The ground clearance on the golf is quite a bit more than the duster, and the golf also had a lower 1st gear ratio than the duster.

The technical specs for the Golf country that I could find are as follow.

Ground clearance 180mm 210 on some versions
KW 73 there were only 50 Gti's made with 85kw
    Torque 143nm
    Acceleration 0-100km/h 12.3s
I can't find any info on the 1st gear ratio.
The Golf was FWD with the rear activated through a clutch on slip

    Duster
    Ground clearance 210mm
    kw 80
    Torque 260nm
    1st gear ratio 4.45
    Acceleration 0-100km/h 12.5s
The Duster is primarily FWD with the rear activated when slipping and there is a manual switchable lock between front and rear.

Like the Golf the 4x4 Duster has under body protection as standard.
