    Default Recommendations on Southern Mozambique

    Hi All,

We are looking at flying into Maputo, hiring a 4x4, and spending about 2 weeks in the Southern part of Mozambique. We expect to travel towards the end of June. (Kinda last minute because our Zambia trip got cancelled, thanks to Covid!)

We are particularly interested in staying in, or near, the Maputo Special Reserve.

Can anybody recommend some sort of self-catering style accommodation in the area? Anything from safari tents to chalets...

Also, does anybody know of a good vehicle hire company in Maputo where we can hire a 4x4?

In the meantime, I'll check out the DriveMoz page. (but it looks like information overload!)

    Thanks in advance,
    Andy.

Hi, Millibangalala is the place I know. Its recently built. Google https://za.hotels.com/ho1550229344/m...aw.ds&modal=dp
Ponta Chemucane is a lodge futher up the coast in the park.
Ponta Mucombo just out side the park. https://web.facebook.com/Bela-Rocha-...1416345091272/
Santa Maria Cabo beach villas on the tip of the peninsula
While you here you must visit Inhaca island
Parque PONTA MALONGANE Large rustic facility with everything.
Ponta Do oro very busy husle and bustle town.
To say you were there you must visit them all it only then it will be a memorable visit it will stick. Every place is a whole world in diffirence dont stay at one place visit them all.
You must have a GPS with T4A tracks for Africa map installed if you visit this area you can get lost and ......

And its from tip to end about 60km per road dont leave anything out. Its an experience

Thank you for your response - really good info!

We are looking at renting a beach villa just north of Ponte de Ouro, and maybe just driving around from there?

How is the road to Ponte de Ouro from Maputo? We will hire a 4x4 but I was told that the roads are thick sand. According to Google Maps, it's just under 2hr drive. Does that sound realistic?

Maputu to Ponta is tar, to anywhere else its sand, deep sand. You wont get speeds like 30km/h. Its not advice able to try and travel to places and travel back. You will run out of time and their is time restrictions because the elephant park is very dangerous with the elephants 0900-1600 is about the safest time to travel.

Just returned from a week at Techobanine just north of Ponta Mamoli. As beautiful as ever. Local economy is struggling with no tourists but everyone friendly and helpful and you can still buy most provisions. Tar road from kosi bay border post runs straight up to Maputo with a link to ponta d'ouro. Ponta Malongane and Mamoli still require 4x4 but sand roads not bad- just deflate tyres and will be fine.
