I have strange friends, those kind of friends that some think can/ should never be friends...

Most times they turn out to be the best of friends

It is a matter of expectation

Do you have friends that are better than what they “ should” be?

My best mate and I couldn't stand each other at first sight....

I remember being invited by another mate to a braai. I asked him if Tubby was invited as I wasn't really keen on going if he was .

Ironically Tubby asked him the same question with the same reservations...

Seeing that Tubby was a biker at the time and me a farmer - we were from totally different worlds.

Best mates today - 15 years later.

But I still refer to him as my dodgy mate.

There is not a single person that I can call a friend. I did have one at boarding school though, we did everything together shadowing each other everywhere until someone else came along and poached him which absolutely gutted me. Prior to Covid I decided to track him down, reached out and went to visit. Shortly after Covid hit I reached out once again offering support as he was in non essential services and not a single response. I’m not into quantity but quality and even that is hard to find.

My best friend was shot and killed 12 years ago in a botched hijacking a few months before my wedding. The criminals never took anything. The cops asked his dad to drive his bakkie home on the night of the incident in his sons blood in fear of the bakkie being stripped at the police pound.

He was to be my best man at my wedding. I asked his dad to stand in for him at the wedding.

There are friends and there are pals and there are acquaintances. True friends are few and will stand by you through thick and thin. True friends are never forgotten!!

Some friendships happen because of change..
because you took another route.. or because your original friend was unavailable...

I have had one real friend (soul mate).
We knew each other from as far back as we could remember (pre-school).
We were in the same class from Gr1 to matric, but not in the same unit during military training.

We continued the friendship until he died 5 yrs ago.

I have many 'friends' but his spot is empty.

I think friendship is a very valuable treasure. I regard my friends very highly and invest in those relationships deeply.

I have friends that I think about how we came to be and marvel that we are. Not puzzle pieces that would fit on the surface of it and yet...

I have friends that due to the nature of our lives can't maintain continuous contact. But no matter how much time has passed in between, we pick up as if no time passed. What a precious thing that is.

I had to end a 42 year friendship earlier this year. That was heartbreaking.

Another of my closest friends is dying of cancer in the next few weeks. Heartbreaking.

But then you realize that when hearts have knit together, it's supposed to hurt when they are ripped apart. We should feel the loss of a person as it's no small thing. I mourn the loss of 2 dear friends lost this year.

And then I open my heart and look forward to the next precious person that will fill that friend space, bringing all the treasure in their jar of clay that I get to enjoy and delight in.

Can't really say that I ever had long term friendships. Guess the longest was during school years.
Thereafter it was friendships based on stages of life. Even at work I had some great pals but as soon as one of us moved along that relationship sort of became none existent.
Nowadays I see myself as a lone bull when it comes to friendships outside of family.

Have maybe 10 friends on Whatsapp that I chat to daily including 4 that were at school with me from Sub A ! One was my neighbour since we both came back from the nursing home in '49. All were at Fish Hoek and Rondebosch schools with me.

Very interesting thread. Very appropriate at this time for me.

I had a best friend at school. A really best friend. I count him amongst the top 3 most intellectual people I have come across in my life - if not the MOST intellectual. And then he died at the age of 37. He would have turned 60 yesterday.

One of my biggest regrets is that I did not maintain enough contact with him after school. The impact he had on my life, on my views, my outlook, my taste in music, some aspects of my life philosophy, is just absolutely indescribable.

    RIP, my friend.

With all due respect. Your wife/partner can be just like your best friend, but he/she is your wife /husband, just a lot more important and closer than a best friend. The same goes for fathers/mothers and children.

Otherwise, you would have to tell your best friends you slept with your besty!

Something strange we've noticed over the years..
In the Cape our house was always open. Braai and huge cooking pots on the stoep. Often came home to find pals all over the place, cooking kreef, braaing or using tools. Phone call to meet for a braai in half an hour. No problem, everyone pitched.
Came to the Transvaal in '81, what a change. Everyone makes appointments, checks dairies, plans braais a month in advance, must arrive at 12.30 sharp. List of grub to bring..so bloody regimental. Painful.
