The other thing to keep in mind, and this is just from a logistics perspective, those returns.

Lets assume a company sends a courier to collect returns, this is 2 trips for one order. It goes back to the warehouse and has to be handled and stored until returned to supplier which requires picking and packing.

At a 1.8 Sigma, thats 377 000 returns per 1 000 000 orders. 1/3rd of all orders incur a double transport, handling and holding cost.

If that was my business, I would be nailing asses to the wall and hiring people who could improve that Sigma and paying them well to do it.

Of course you dont have to collect if that is cheaper than the above reverse logistics costs.

But you still have to pick, pack and deliver the right order again so no escaping the bang to profit.

As a rule, returns will always be a part of a business but not the purpose of the business so they would naturally complicate the return process a with terms and conditions etc but they would still need to comply with the conditions of the consumer protection act by law.

So yes, returns are extremely counter productive in any business but it comes back to a previous point I made about the product reviews. Can we trust them. If so to what extent? So, when fake reviews are purposely posted by bots and paid fake reviewers, can we draw a reliable statistic on the relationship between returns and fake reviews ? In other words- what is the cost of product returns due to fake product reviews?

    This is a rabbit hole.

Data is king second to cash in any online business these days. Online stores for many are good income and online businesses the the b2b sphere is rapidly growing as it potentially shortens cash cycles through immediate credit card payments vs offering 30 day accounts and reduces complicated overhead structures.

I know of a guy who has an online store. Lives in Jhb. His store has US customers that order on his website. His US suppliers deliver straight to his customers using a drop shipment principle. Money all banked and kept offshore.

I've only ever missed an item once. A little RAM module that didn't arrive. No idea how, the box was empty XD. Took some convincing that the box was empty, but they sorted it out.

For 62.7% of respondents to the poll it was a very good experience 100% of the time.

For the other 37.2, it was less than a 100% experience.

Dependent on a number of variables such as product, product category, location of supplier, location of stock and so on, the probability of receiving an order which exceeds 90% of a customer's expectations is 26.7% but it does also show that there is a possibility of having an 80% experience of 67.5%

The ''average'' experience would sit between 80 and 90%, lets say 85%. The probability at 85% is 50%. In other words, it could go either way.

The Sigma rating indicates that out of all orders processed, at least 31% will not satisfy the customer for some reason.

Again, this only represents the experience of those who took the poll, not the broader customer base or the broader forum membership. The representative sample required for forum members would require at least 8 500 members taking the poll.

6 Respondents had an 80% experience

    5 Respondents had a 70% experience

The probability of having an experience >80% is 67%

Poor stopped buying from them as you waste too much time, Prices are good though
Mostly incorrect item, they usually send a cheaper similar item when out of stock, they must spend a fortune on courier fees. I agree the refund policy is quick.
But long delays in delivery, once I even cancelled after waiting two weeks.
I bought an item in January returned it they gave my money back, I have advised them 6/7 times its still sitting in my office in the box waiting for the courier. I have given up asking when they going to collect , They keep saying it has been collected. So some poor supplier is out of pocket.
