Our standard time for setting up our RTT is 45minutes from stop to a lit braai and packing up around 60minutes from end of coffee or breakfast. We spent time working out which sequence is quickest and who does what to get it to that. The reason for being a bit pedantic about this part of over landing has to do with those long travel days or days with unforeseen delays, an hour extra of pack up time before a 5-6 hour travel reduces the safety margin considerably. The one thing you don't want is to be setting up in the dark or even gloaming time that's when you want to be settled and fully alert for whatever the bush may throw at you.

I don't want to spend more than 30 minutes setting up camp. If you do, you either have the wrong equipment or doing it wrong.

I think it is always a difficult question. For one night stays, we are set up in minutes. The Bundutop takes seconds and the trailer legs using a drill also takes seconds. For longer stays, we put down a big ground sheet and set up the Tentco senior gazebo which can add another 15 mins.

For even longer stays the shower tent comes out and the solar panels and the big table ..........

We try to be as flexible as possible as we like to travel and see different places, which always requires different set ups.

I must admit we have been eyeing the clam shell RTT option because it allows for that quick set up overnight only option. I estimate that it would cut our set and pack up times by a further 30 minutes.

What we found when looking around and seeing a lot of options was that those RTT or TTT that had big awnings were always time consuming to set up. Our solution was to have a separate gazebo with sides and doors. Shade , shelter and keeps us dry as well as good deal of privacy.

We have a howling moon TTT on a Challenger (see pic)

So, my question is setup time and pack down time.

It takes my wife and I at least an 1hour 30mins to 2 hours for both. I just want to know if this is about right or if we could do anything differently?

Thanks in advance. n add on question - Does anyone know where in KZN I could repair my rain/dew sheet?
Had the same tent on our Echo 4. We managed to set up in about 45 minutes, but then the added awning was always left attached if we were going camping and knew we would need it, avoiding the clumsy zipping to attach it. Where we were on the move, just a few nights in a spot, we left it at home and had just the awning section and 3 or 4 poles. One ground sheet, separate table and 2 chairs. If 4 or 5 nights, we put up the extra awning and lived with the time because it was worth it then.

As per others here, stop racing, both to get there and to get set up, you're on holiday, terrible time to create your own stress.

This is the full Monty that takes us 6 minutes to set up, I know a lot of people are going to say BS but if you want I have a video that is just short of 6 min.
I designed the tent and awnings to be able to use as needed, tent alone or with one or both fly sheets. The kitchen awniing can be rolled up and clipped out of the way if camping for one day or if there is a tree..

Breaking this set up would be 10 - 15 min working a a leisurely pace and if it starts to rain, less than 10 min

You may have given Bundutec an idea - look at this!

I have always liked your setup - KISS, and actually a very logical solution to many questions in this regard.

    Thanks hatjohan, appreciate the comments.

When OZ was still here the idea was to produce an empty trailer at a good price, incl of the Bundutop, and then allow the customer to customize as they saw fit. Sadly the idea never took off.

Bundutecs trailer will be packed with everything you need and will be price accordingly.

We are a family of 4 (11&5) year old.
We have a Tentco Family tent as below. Setup takes about 30-40 with the additional awning included. The the problem lies with all the loose items aka creature unnecessary comforts aka los kakketjies. Take down similar. I have done it on my own a couple off time at leasurely pace an taken about hour. Includes hooked to the vehicle ready to jump and go

100% agree on this, originally we tried to use the built in veranda section on the Tentco TTT. But soon realised it was a bad idea for a number of reasons.

    • caught the wind and put stress on the trailer tent in rough conditions
    • could not be relocated depening on the camp layout
    • greatly complicated setup and breakdown.
    • HAD to be setup each time. Even if we didnt want to use it.

We then ditched the extension and just have the basic tent, plus a separate gazebo with sides as per stranger. Much more versatile, and makes the whole setup more modular.

Now the TTT has 2 poles and 3 main pegs that must go up, the rest can be added as required. Setup is max 20 minutes for the "light" version.

We should discern between tent setup time and camp setup time.

I can setup my TTT in 5 - 10 minutes.

My camp setup can take up to 90 minutes plus, but then its for a stay of 7 - 14 days while being completely self-sufficient. Post #6

Being completely self-sufficient compared to glamping at a resort (with 220v, ablutions and a shop) also have an impact on ones setup time.

For one night stops one will of course use a completely different setup.

    4 hours.

Stopped at Tsendze camp in KNP at 12h00 in 30 deg heat.

    Chose a position to park.

Opened a bottle of ice cold Amarula.

Sip, do something, sip, do something, sip, do something.

Somehow things just became so effortless and just flowed.....

    Finished at 16h00. I think..

Seriously 1.5 hrs for that setup is fair.

We had a similar one and our tour of Bots was 2 -3 days per camp, and that is what we averaged.
