Talking Rooftop Trailer Tent Setup Times

    Hello all...

I never grew up camping (wasted childhood, I know! haha!) but now I absolutely cannot live without it! We first started camping in March 2018. We've since been able to change our set up to suit us more and accommodate the kiddies better.

We have a howling moon TTT on a Challenger (see pic)

So, my question is setup time and pack down time.

It takes my wife and I at least an 1hour 30mins to 2 hours for both. I just want to know if this is about right or if we could do anything differently?

    Thanks in advance.

As an add on question - Does anyone know where in KZN I could repair my rain/dew sheet?

It will depend on a lot of things. Putting out groundsheet yes or no. Putting up the awning to mention a couple. Levelling ,terrain ext.

That setup of yours does have a lot of poles to erect.

There are definitely quicker trailer tent setups than yours

Depends on where in KZN you are based. Gans Tents does all kinds of repairs to all tents. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...1Q8hAlLmvcRAnp

Basic setup is always approx 30min if you have a set routine. However as stated the extras take time. Also how and where you pack is important. I have always found that you spend more time with tables, lights, ground sheets and all the small odds and sods than you do with your initial, setup. Take what need and use. Leave the rest at home. Pack after use rather than the end of a weekend save heaps of time.

Everyone has different needs, for my wife and I set up time is critical....id say max 20 minutes with our current rig and we are having a glass of wine. The RTT on the Courage Conqueror is just amazing to set up. Anything more than 30 minutes to me is just not worth it, would rather stay at home than go through that mission, but that's just me, plus no kids must make it easier too for us.

a Lot depends on your setup, length of stay, the amount of people. Your is not to long

Its the small things that take time.

    - Deciding where to pitch
    - Unlocking all the trailer doors and nose cone.
    - Leveling the trailer
    - Deploying the supports
    - Ground sheets
    - Open tent cover
    - Open the tent
    - Release the bungi cords inside
    - Open the bed
    - Open doors and windows
    - Tent pegs
    - Awning up with poles and pegs
    - Table & chairs
    - Lights setup
    - Solar panels and cables out and connected
    - Braai or fire pit out
    - 220v connection
    - Water setup?
    - Camp shower/toilet tent
    - Porta Potti and gas water heater setup
    - Drinking beer

a Trailer with a TTT is for longer stays and does take a while, it does get quicker with practice.

a Trailer with a RTT is quicker. No poles and pegs.

a Vehicle with a RTT is the quickest. No poles, pegs or support legs to deploy. Only leveling.

Ground tents can be anywhere in between, from quick pitch turbo tents that goes up in seconds to huge and heavy canvas tent setups that takes a while.

Each type of setup has its own merits and it depending on your circumstances, there is no right or wrong just, yours and mine

I am seriously considering selling my TTT on my Conqueror Courage and getting a RTT!

Vir ons vat dit so 30min om die RTTT op te slaan en 60 min om al my vrou se kakketjies uit te pak.

When we first got our Bushlapa Baobab 2 years ago SWAMBO and I were timing how long it took us to set up camp, we weren't obsessed with it but were keeping track of how long it took. Our 28 year old daughter was with us part way through our first trip and she said to us "For heaven's sake what the dickens is wrong with you two, you are retired, what difference does it make whether you take 25 or 35 minutes? You have 3 years of travel ahead of you, relax, catch your breath, don't be dumb!" Those were very wise words, thereafter we took her advice and even if we took an extra 5 - 10 minutes what difference does it make.

Agree, that why packing in the right order is so important. When you stop at camp site you get the wife to make a drawing of how she want the setup to look like while you get the beer. So beer at the back. The you need her recliner chair, screw top bottle of wine, glass (not steel cup or plastic). Take items and place them under a tree a distance from intended camp setup and point wife in direction. Next get crates with kids toys, swimming gear and IPads and hand it over. They know what to do and will disappear. Now you can setup the camp in half the time it would have taken with everybody "trying"to help.

We’re done in 10 both setup and take down.

Bundutop and bunduawn. But that’s RTT, no trailer, and no groundsheet. Just chairs, table, and light the fire.

Yes, that's our plan for a 7 month safari to East Africa when we return in 2022 or 2023. We will leave our Bushlapa in storage in SA. We will move fairly often with quite a few 1 or 2 day stays, so will fit either a Bundutop or an Alu-cab gen 3 plus awning.

I have exact same tent setup and agree with your 1 1/2 hrs
Lots of poles and ropes and pegs into the ground as well as sides etc. Especially if you want it set up neatly and all canvas pulled straight and fairly tight.

Damn sorry I sold my Jurgens Xcape. setup took 10-15 mins

I found that if I send my wife and 10 year old daughter to the shop or just take a walk, it takes me less time. Also less chance for a fight at the start of the holiday.

I know my way around my Ultimate Overland tent and it takes me about 1 1/2 hours to set up by myself.
I don't rush and open a beer before I begin. This way I feel much more relaxed and easy going by the time I am done.

I think that as age catches up with us these things become more difficult. 10 years ago before we returned to Africa we owned a great Aussie made TTT. We used it regularly and loved it, the set up time was 90-120 minutes for a full setup as shown in the photo below. When Covid forced us to return to Australia last year we took the trailer out of storage and started using it again. However now in my 60's (and being used to the Bushlapa setup) the time and effort to erect the TTT was just to difficult. I think a TTT is a younger and stronger man's job. We sold the TTT just before Christmas.
