Default a Dedicated trail vehicle - What one would you choose from these?

    SFA Hilux
    JKU Rubicon
    70 Series
    Jimny
    D22

Obviously to mod the crap out of them, but definitely not to turn into a pipe car.

It pains me to say it.
but it just has to be the Jeep.

HOWEVER every Jeep driver I’ve ever seen on a trail (Admittedly, only the ‘tame’ trails, dewildt, hennops, piesangkloof) looks like he’s bored out of his mind, and the jimny guy is having the time of his life.

    what’s a d22?

I would put a FJ cruiser on the list as well. Post 2012 as it has the large tank 159lts, crawl control and A track.

    The later equivalent of this!

A monster in the ruff stuff.

What you choose very much depend on being drivable to and from Trail areas. Or do you trailer the Trail car everywhere. If so then one can truly go ballistic with mods.

I also did hectic stuff in a reasonable modded 80 series Cruiser, lockers front and rear, aka Suidi in 4WD 24-7.

The ones with the most aftermarket spares available.

My first choice will be Jeep. Read somewhere that there are around 70 different suspensions available.

Second will be a Land Cruiser. The cherry ontop will be a shorty 4.5EFI
76 Will also be nice on 35's.
I found the wheelbase of the 79 to long for trail stuff.

Jimny no 3. The are capable and with the right driver follow a Jeep everywhere.
Only down side is I have yet to see a Jimny perform in dunes.

FJ was mentioned. The below if the R100M lotto pick my numbers then I’ll have SWAMBO’s FJ converted

Not there though, and I doubt you would need 160l of fuel on a trail

To be honest, a SWB has its place, but I wont buy one. I know that bars the Jimny from being a viable option, but it is definitely less prone to flipping due to its lower weight and COG

Out of curiosity: the Gelandewagen is hardly ever mentioned in this type of discussions. Any specific reason? Surely it must be contender. Or is it because there is an unspoken acceptance that it leads the pack?

Too expensive, and modding it would be hefty too

And in my opinion cutting and modding a classic like that would be painful and sacrilege

Agree wholeheartedly as I nearly flipped the TJ on a very steep incline.

The wheelbase of the FJ and perhaps as Grips mentioned the 76 tho is awesome.

A bakkie based monster again is too long in my opinion.

Out of your choices I chose the 70 series.

I do feel a trail vehicle must be slightly multi purpose except if you are doing Competitions. So a big capable SUV can also do an overland trip or a multi day trail like the river trip.

    Have fun choosing.
In my dreams! Amarok v6 and FJ.
    Reality! Uber.

I have been looking at modifying the 76 for some time now. Hope t start doing it in the next few months. Still needs to get the wife a FJ.
The 76 is by no means a challenge to a modified Wrangler. However it did not once disappoint on the serious stuff I have done in it.
This plain Jane 76 haunts me

I have not done any measurements but I don’t think it is any bigger than a 76 Cruiser. The Y61 is a different story!

Are you considering these personally or is this just a fantasy exercise? Reason for asking is there are more suggestions to be made, but if this is your personal list then it is not my intention to try and "convince" you of any vehicles you are not interested in.
