    Default What changed with Peanut Butter?

    When I was (much) younger, opening a jar of peanut butter usually found a layer of oil on the top that had to be mixed in. This resulted in an easily spreadable goo that used to melt into hot bread like real butter does.

    Today you're greeted by a sticky putty like sludge of even consistency that can be sculpted and remains like that forever, never returning to an even surface in the jar. Spreading on hot bread doesn't result in melting, it just breaks the bread up.

    And this is Black Cat, the most famous brand. Anyone know what has happened?

    Yum-yum is much better.

    Yes exactly, itís very putty like now. And much sweeter to me. Iím sure I remember Black Cat said no added salt or sugar too. Whatever they have itís just not as good as it was. My next best choice is the woollies one.

    Get some peanut oil and add it yourself.

    I think the health and safety people took exception and had it removed.

    The oil was part of the problem they had and didn't know what to do with it. So the bottle came with the oil. Was a way if getting rid of it.b

    Few years later there are all kinds of uses for the oil and it is expensive.

    Bio fuel is one use that has increased massively! Cosmetics, explosives. All use veg oil.

    And then of course just buying peanut oil to cook with.

    By the Woolworths brand no added sugar peanut butter. Itís a red label I think. As close as it gets to the black cat from the old days.

    or, if you really want a treat, buy their organic one. Often ďfree rangeĒ and ďorganicĒ are just catch phrases to allow them charge more for stuff, based on what is essentially window dressing to allow the said labelling, but that 100% natural peanut butter from woolies is awesome.

    both the regular, and the organic ones seperate when standing a while, as they should..... none of that modelling clay crap you get from black cat

    Yip, black cat just not the same anymore. Yum yum as well as pick n pay is better.
    I remember that melt into the toast versions, they were awesome. You could probably still find those oily layer types if you have a look at wholesale places that stock those unknown brands which usually gets sold to spaza type shops. My favourite (when mom was on a budget and didn't buy a top brand) was the 'jumbo' brand, I kinda remember it having a pink elephant on the logo. Mixing in that top oily layer was part of the experience.

    But ja black cat is probably the worst nowadays. I read an article a year or 2 ago about a group of journos testing popular brand peanut butter and black cat came out close to last. I think Yum-Yum was the 2nd best after some crazy snobby expensive woolies stuff.

    Yum Yum has added sugar and salt and a stabiliser - high melting point fat. Black Cat supposed to be peanuts only. Filling and initial storage temperatures are what stop the product from oiling out - if you cool it down to the correct teperature and then fill it, then store it for 24 hours at the correct storage temperature after filling, the fat in the peanut butter forms beta crystals and the product will not oil out. If this is done incorrectly the fat remains as alpha crystals and the product can oil out.

    So if you like oily peanut butter try heating it up to above 70 degrees C and let it cool down slowly and this might do the trick.

    Woolies and Yun Yum made in the same factory but to different recipes. Same raw peanuts though.

    Try the Yum Yum Double crunch, it excellent, I eat it by the spoonful just like that. The Yum Yum sugar free is also nice, great consistency.

    I wonder if Black Cat isn't just imported. Huge problem with imported peanut butter from India, they're landing their finished product at less than the cost of peanuts due to the duties on nuts but no duties in the finished product.

    To be very honest; I hated the oil on top and was extremely happy when I got to know Yum-yum. I guess taste differs.

    Also, for a ďno name brandĒ try Thokoman. You get it at most supermarkets, itís really good tasting, and cheap. Have used it in bulk catering before, amd itís excellent.

    In Midrand there is a place caller Empire nuts and they do a peanut butter, its not sweet at all and its like a couple if bucks cheaper than the other name brands.

    They still have a crunchy and a smooth version without added sugar nor salt.
    But the normal ones do have added sugar and salt.

    When I worked in Tanzania, the locally produced peanut butter had that layer of oil on top.
    You can find some "health brands" at Food Lovers Market and at Dischem, they also have that layer of oil.
    Problem is, that a lot of popular brands claim zero transfats, but then show hydrogenated oils, which are transfats.
    Black Cat for one is pretty natural and only adds salt and sugar, but at least offers the totally natural versions without even that.

    Also love peanut butter, but I hate the oil on top. I prefer a dry peanut butter.

    I only buy no sugar, no salt version and Woolies are my favourite, plus they always have the big bottles. Yum-yum is very good, but I can always only find the small bottles which is impractical for the amounts I use.

    Those whose say Woolies are crazy expensive: what is the price of a big bottle of their brand of PB? What is the price of Black Cat at Woolies compared to Checkers? Come on, tell me.

    BTW I thought PB and peanuts are the devils spawn for the keto crowd Why you eating peanut butter, Olyfboer?

    Its my racing fuel, a peanut butter and jam with white bread sandwich let me do 100km on the MTB.

    I do find some are much tastier and that thokoman is very good.

    We grew up with my dad roasting peanuts and then mincing them, added salt and tasted fantastic!
