    Default Home Theater

Hi. Do you guys know of places where they have demo room to try/listen home theater speakers before buying? I know about Bose. I am asking shops that stock all different brands. Thanks.

Just remember that it will never sound the same in your house.

If you are looking at high end, then rather get the guys to come to your house, see the room and then recommend different speakers.

Mid range stuff, then it's more about budget, although some guys will still come out, if you commit to buying from them.

Give the locally made Bentley brand a go. Apparently excellent value for money.

In Johannesburg Morne has a nice demo room.

Don't bother with other places, simply try the two specialists recommended:

    Morne at Home Cinema King
    Wayne at HFX Alberton.

Whatever you buy, make sure that the AVR has room correction. The best IMHO is DIRAC, but some brands have their own proprietary version.

Depending on your budget, have a look at the likes of NAD, Anthem, Arcam, Emotiva, MacIntosh, etc. Personally I don't like Denon/Marantz/Onkyo stuff, they just don't sound right to me, but one of my best friends swears by Denon.

In the end it doesn't matter what you get, as long as you're happy with the sound

You can find some good bargains in the Classifieds section of the local AV Forums, e.g.: https://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,94139.0.html.

    Yea definitely get a MacIntosh,

A very very small percentage of people will be able to tell the difference between the range toppers of NAD , Marantz, Rotel , Denon in a blind Test.

But I don't know the OP. Your typical consumer will probably not want to drop more than R50k on sound for a home theatre.

A MacIntosh processor with an amplifier will cost more than most peoples car here.
But the you will need speakers and cables to do them justice.

And there goes Jannie and Sannie College fund

Indeed. Unfortunately the Classifieds board is blocked for non-members of AVSA. This had to be done to protect the interests of the sellers who advertise gear for sale.

Yeah, OP did not specify his budget, so rather give him more options than not. Most people are also not aware of these brands, because your typical AV shop just pushes volume with the likes of Sony, Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, etc.

You'd be surprised at how well you can train your brain wrt good sound. I once listened to a setup of B&W 802s driven by a pair of MacIntosh amps... literally brought me to tears, it was so good.

IMHO, life's too short to drive a Corolla if you can afford a 911. Also, kids, they're not that great

Also, I forgot to tell the OP that electronics come & go, but a decent set of speakers is for life.

I would recommend spending more money on the speakers than the AVR. You will find yourself upgrading AVRs every 4-5 years as the AV specs change anyway.

Again, depending on $$$, something like PSB T3, Monitor Audio, Klipsch, Sonus Faber, Dali, Focal, B&W, etc.

I have the babies. One pair of 805 D and a Pair of 805s.

My Marantz amp does a pretty decent job at powering them.,

Maybe one day I'll sell a kidney for a Decent amp
