I also have one of these "Fishing Rod" lights and I just love it.

Mine is 5m high and output is 48 000 lumens and it does not use much current. I had it on from sundown to about 02:00 in the morning during a gathering of friends at a private camp on a farm where everyone were kuiering under the light till that time of morning. I went to sleep at around 23:00 and when I notice everyone were in bed at 02:00, I simply switched off the light from out of my bed with the remote control, without the need to get up. It was cuppled to my 65 Ah starter batter and the Hilux started easily the next morning.

I use it only when camping alone on private land and only switch it on when I need to. I will not use it in camping grounds where it may annoy other campers.

It works a treat and the remote control is very convenient. I operate the light from out of my camping chair. It works especially well when fishing at the dam or river to operate your fishing rods and to have ample light when reeling in, rebait and casting again.

Here is a photo of the specs as on the packaging of my light.

If I may add a bit of information regarding the fishing rod lights.

The remote control works very well and I think that this lights would not be very popular without it. We have tested the remote up to nearly a 100 meters and it operated the light consistantly. Though I believe it operates by infrared beam (the handset remote control has a Infrared LED) it works so reliably as if operating by means of radio frequency.

The remote control frequency are the same on all remote handsets and if there are more than one light, one remote control will operate all the lights sumaltaniously.

Just take note. When you assemble the light for use at the camping site, that you connect the remote transponder which is installed in the power cord, right close to the big LED light, right at the top of the rod. Otherwise the remote will not function. We learned this during a camping trip up the Zululand Coast, November last year. You do not have to point the remote at the transponder as you would do with a TV set. It work through the canvas of a dome tent as well as even from the inside of my glass fibre canopy.

And as Bex has mentioned earlier on in this threat, the light keeps the bugs at a safe distance, high up above your head.

It comes wit crocodile clamps and also a seperate standard male lighter socket connector.

I think where the confusion with the 500W cames in, is that I have seen advertiments where it is claimed that the light output is equivalent to a 500w incandescent bulb, light output.

Lastly. This concept is not nearly new.

The old Voortrekker Boers use this concept already in 1838 during the battle of Blood River when they attached their lanterns to the tips of their very long whip handles (sweepstokke) in order to cast the flimsy light at the maximum distance.

Indeed nothing new under the sun.

Ek kry myne hopenlik volgende Dinsdag.

Toccata, daai ligte is soos 'n straatlig ou maat, ernstig.

Maar as jy in 'n privaat kamp is sal dit baie gied werk indien jy so sou besluit.

Hy gebruik hom basies dan as sekuriteits lig.

So as jy hom flouer stel dan trek hy natuurlik minder krag.

Nee, ek sê jou, ek is mal oor myne.
