Default 300Tdi Oil Pressure light flickering

Went on a long trip and when stopping at the offramp at idle the oil pressure light flickers. By increasing the idle speed marginally the light goes out. Once off the highway and driving around town slowly the light no longer flickers at idle.
    What could the problem be?

How many kms on the clock and also how long since last oil change. Is the temp staying normal. Best bet would be to do an oil and filter change. See if that sorts it out.

218 000km and did an oil and filter change less than 500km back. Did change oil brand but same viscosity. Worth changing back to original oil brand?

Yes might be good idea. I have Mazda 2 5tdi with 240k on clock and Prado Kzte with 220k on clock. Change oil and filters at 10k intervals and use Castrol GTD oil. Never an issue so far.

i have had the oil pressure sensor fail on mine before

    same systems as you mention

easy to replace to see if that's the problem

    but don't ignore this issue

Check whether the oil light takes longer than usual to go out when starting up - especially from cold.

This might be something small like the sensor or maybe the oil itself, but it could also be your oil pump on its way out - which could cost you an engine. Although a 300tdi with that on the clock should not normally have oil pump issues

I acknowledge there are many variables which influence this but what sort of mileage can one expect from the 300 Tdi motor assuming it is properly maintained.

My Disco Tdi is sitting on 355 000
My Defender Tdi is sitting on 578 000

Both engines unopened, Disco just got a new lift pump, Defender has had new injectors fitted and the diesel pump overhauled.

At what mileage did you do the injectors and pump?

My oil light switch did the same the other day and was a cheap fix instead of what it could have been.

About 500 000 - was still fine up to then but filled up at a filling station that had had their tanks contaminated by water. Cleaned and flushed and it ran perfectly. Did the work pro-actively as it is used daily for work purposes.

The flickering of oil light happened a couple of times in my tdi's life, exactly as you said....when getting off highway and idling. Always been the oil sender switch which caused it. Bought an original sender last time and haven't had the issue for some years.

    I've had this twice before
First time was sensor busy failing. I think it's about R130 or so
Second time was turbo about to go. It got gradually worse then she started using oil. New turbo core was under 2k

I always get accused of thinking the worse so, take that into consideration but I'd be getting my oil pressure checked. Of course you need to do it while hot and at both revving and at idle.
It may well be all of the things mentioned in the above posts but, it could also be one bearing that has worn out.

    I just reconditioned my engine. A 300tdi.
A few months before I did the rebuild, I blew the head gasket going up a hill and of course it overheated. I repaired the head and gasket but I eventually got a big end knock about 2 thousand K's later.
Upon dismantling and inspection, it was obvious that the big end bearing on Number 4 was worn through pretty badly and I think it was because of the overheating episode. The other 3 weren't too bad.
There's a theory around, that once the oil pressure drops on these engines through age or whatever, the bearing in Number 4 is starved for oil. I don't know enough to KNOW that this is fact but in theory, it does make sense.

    Good luck!!

... on a TD5 the oil P sensor sits on the flange mounting of the oil filter ... (below the turbo) and not far from the hot stuff like exhaust manifold , pipe etc ... would need check wire is not de-insulated & shorting against anything hot...

... not sure of location/setting of sensor for Tdi ... ?
