Default Huge fire on Table Mountain

Big fire in heavily wooded areas from Groote Schuur all the way across to Newlands Forset and around UCT

Rhodes Memorial restaurant exploded and burnt down -hope this does not get into UCT

3 helicopters doing very tough and dangerous work in thick smoke and against mountain -respect to them and all firefighters on a very hot day, and with wind picking up, on a very long day ahead.

People have been advised to urgently evacuate all nearby areas on the mountain.

I understand from local social media reports that UCT is evacuating.

Please tell any staff you may know who have interests there

    Very bad indeed !

Wind is picking up, three buildings on fire at UCT -

Fire Department gratefully accepting donations of bottled water, Energade type drinks( not fizzy drinks)snack/health bars and eye-drops-- -to drop at your local fire station-NOT to the scene.

    This fire is proving devastating!

Sadly Mostert's Mill has burnt down -built 1796
-residential areas nearby being evacuated now, several houses burnt

    - impossible to see anything at all in the pall of smoke

-view from RedCross Hospital a little while ago.

Not sure if the helicopters have been grounded now

-visibility at fire area looks like 0% from this vantage point

-not hearing them as before- or fire has moved considerably South-?

I am truly saddened. I spent my late teens and earlier twenties getting up to great fun and unspeakable mischief in those very localities.

Latest is that besides Mostert's Mill, Jagger Library (priceless collections of Africana), Fuller Hall residence, and Welgelegen farm house (one of the original six or seven farms allocated by Van Riebeeck and just after) all damaged, some very badly. Jagger Library looks very bad, a real tragedy. It has been hectic, with the fire jumping wildly, palm trees on Main Road igniting, several houses in Upper Mowbray and Rosebank burnt. Our community has been mobilizing Energade etc for the firefighters and temporary accommodation for the evacuated students, helliishly hot conditions, although the wind has now swung south east, so it is cooling down.

Very, very sad indeed. Just hope everything ends fast and with the least of damage.

It's amazing how embers can land anywhere, sometimes kilometres away from the fire...

There were reports of trees catching fire as low down as the Liesbeck river.

Whatever you are trying to infer is wrong - this was very similar to the Knysna fire of a few years back, the fire jumping huge distances, palm trees igniting in Main Road, hundreds of metres away from the fire front. It was very hot with extremely low humidity today, and has been like that for a few days. Jagger Library is one of the oldest buildings on campus, and not far from the stone pines below Rhodes Mem - the fire did what wildfires do, it jumped. Don't try and infer some kind of conspiracy theory.
