A work colleague bought the 2L turbo petrol recently and I took it for a spin not long after.
Wonderful car and if I was in the market for a R1.2m (or whatever they cost) 4x4, it would be at the top of my list.

Beautiful vehicle....i agree... But it should not be called a Defender.!!!... Maybe a disco or something like that.

The defender has lost its heritage like the 'royal family'... but I guess each to their own

IMO, if I was a Defender fan I would feel very cheated, disappointed and betrayed. This is a true "Pretender". The Grenadier will be the true Defender successor and is what Land Rover should've built.

This new "Defender" is a good car, make no mistake, and a very capable 4x4 but it's a really a Discovery "5", with the D5 really being a Range Rover.

A bigger 4 door Jimny could also be a better Defender replacement than what they've produced. It will have its place but will never sell or become a legend like the old one. And that is an unbelievable and unforgivable opportunity lost.

Real Defender fans will forever wonder what could've been...

Real Defender fans will just continue to drive their current Defenders. There is already a massive indy support network for these vehicles. This will just continue, and the "real" Defender will become a classic car, along with the LC105, the Y60/61 Patrol and the SFA Gelandewagen. Remnants of an earlier time.

The rest of us, who need to compromise and use their vehicles for more than one function, will buy the new Defender. I believe they will sell well. I still think it will make an excellent D4 replacement, when the time comes.

Die Ausies het klaar al n paar accesories uitgebring vir die nuwe Defender, een is n 4" lift, sonder om die drive shaft angels te verander en dan 35" tires optesit. Dit lyk mal mooi.

At grass roots level (aka from a worm's eye perspective)
As a pension-less pensioner living on modest investments
I can offer the following observations:
About two years ago I spent a similar amount on a brand new
107 sq m ground floor apartment with three bedrooms, two
bathrooms, two carports and a 65 sq m garden with much
lower keeping and operating costs and possibly small capital
    appreciation.

If I invested a similar cost amount wisely in offshore units trust
and drawn a frugal monthly amount of say R3250 per month,
after five years I would not only have my initial investment
intact, but it would have probably appreciated to reach some
where between R2.75 to R2.9 mil.

If you look after the Defender well and keep it below 100000 km
both it, and I last for next five years, I would probably be able then
to offer you about R250000 for it.

In the mean time I would have slum it with my "poor man's Toyota"
    namely a 2012 Jeep Cherokee Sport 3.7L A/T that I bought about
May 2013 with 14000 km on the clock (with a hardly perceptible
paint scratch on the front bumper) which by now has 66000 km
on the clock and it's insurable value have shrunk to R120000.

BTW: I was looking a while ago for a previous model Diesel
Defender in a good condition and low km but most had too high
    (asking, not necessarily getting prices.

I also looked at new Diesel 4x4 D/C Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger
because my Jeep has an atrocious fuel consumption, but was
deterred, mainly because of travel restrictions imposed by
our Democratically unelected Command Council. After processing
the projected costs or loss of return if I had to cash in investments
I realised that even at a huge fuel cost saving I could not justify
the capital expenditure and the increased other costs, even if
travel restrictions to Botswana, Namibia, Angola and Mozambique
    were totally lifted.

Motor vehicles prices, regardless of make and model have become
increasingly astronomical and are manufactured with design
obsolescence in mind, and excessive parts and labour prices for
    maintenance and repairs.

For comparison purposes, in May 1980 I bought a brand new
Toyota Hilux 4x4 for R6900. Prices have since gone up between
80 and 100 fold, but equivalent level salaries only went up by
    between 40 and 50 fold.
