Default Help needed: 2001 Jetta 4 1.9 Tdi

About 2 months ago, I bought a 2001 Jetta 4 tdi for my son to drive to universaty but because he must still get his lisence. So I am driving it to work and back. Wednesday coming from work, litterally about 6km from work heading home, the engine just died. There was a clicking sound in dash and motor just died while sounding like running on 3 cylinders. No metal or knocking sounds, no smoke, oil or water and from there on the car would not start at all. It cranked like something on 3 cylinders....

    What I did and checked:
    1) removed timing belt cover - belt is still tight and checked it with a flash light while son cranked it over, no damage
    2) glow plug relay 109 is working.
    3) all fuses are good
    4) all glow plugs checked and 100%
    5) wiring harnas checked and voltage at each plug
    6) fuel shut off relay on diesel pump checked and working
    7) all diesel lines ontop of injectors slightly loosened and motor cranked, diesel coming through strong
    8) glow plug light comes on in dash and goes off as usual
    9) battery checked, 12.5V and was put on charge over night.
    10) crank speed sensor is working because rev counter working while cranking.
    11) did unplug water temp sensor but still doesn't start.
    12) oil level 100% and no water in oil.
    13) water level also 100%.

But car still doesn't want to start.

Can anyone suggest or help please?

Get an ODB adaptor and check for codes. Or even better a VCDS diagnostic tool if you know anyone with one.

Feed it some quick start. If it fires the quick start, your compression is there.

Had the Audi 1.9 tdi maybe 12 years ago. Had endless troubles. Eventually I tracked it to a fuse in the main wiring harness in the dashboard. Replaced the fuse. After VW wanted to replace the turbo, injectors and everything.
This was not an option. The bill would have been more than the car was worth at that time.
New fuse and she took off like a demon.
    Hope this helps you.

Skylark, I am currently looking to buy one. Had a local mechanic come and read codes and according to him, zero codes.....

Henris, think I will try that but will quick start work on a diesel?

Spliffcat, I saw that on youtube and opened the dash. 2 x 15 amp fuses in there and a 30A fuse for the gliw plugs. All fine.

Yes it does. Not to much. You literally just want to hear it cough.

I had a 1.9tdi and I loved it. Dropped a valve and wrecked the turbo. Rebuilt the motor and she ran like the clappers again.

Did the mechanic do a vcds or generic scan? There may not be a fault code that the generic scan will pick up but something vcds will pick up.

There is a crank sensor and a cam sensor, if the cam sensor failed the engine will not run due to getting conflicting signals.

Those engines are pretty much bullet proof if maintained properly

Strange how experiences differ, I also had a A4 1.9tdi, by far the cheapest and most reliable vehicle I ever owned. Drove it from 60k to 250k km with only a clutch and rear shocks outside of normal maintenance. Sold the car to my BIL who had to swap the turbo at 300k km and its still going.

Mullerza, the guy had an huge multi scanner with about a 12" screen. I have heard where guys with scan readers costin almost R30k did not pick up codes and a friend of a friend who has the Delphi set-up on his laptop picked up the error codes.....totally weird but ja, will have to get that guy with the Delphi to come and plug in. Delphi is only R1500 on Bid or Buy.

Will check into that cam sensor......

There must be someone with VCDS in your area that can help with a scan. That is the right tool for the job scan wise. I also know there is a VAG Spec Centre somewhere down in CT that all the Treg guys use with great reviews, if it is a difficult problem they should have the tools and expertise required.

Send me a PM if you would like me to share contact details.

Edit, sorry I see your profile list you as located in Dispatch? Then CT would not be applicable...

Thanks Commander. Hopefully the local guy will be here late this afternoon. He uses the Delphi scan tool and software on his laptop. I will be looking at buying that Delphi package as well but only a bit later when finances allow....

    Just an update...

Borrowed a compression tester. I removed all the glow plugs but the compression tester is for petrol engines. Had my son swing the motor and pistons #1, #3 and #4 had good compression.. .. piston #2 had zero compression. I could close the glow plug hole with my finger.

    Further update....

Removed tappet cover and cam snapped just before 2nd bearing journal. All the nuts were hand loose on cam caps......must have been when previous owner had work done.

Sending head in today to have it checked.
