Cool Is bigger BETTER? Camping fridge!!!!

    Morning friends

I'm upgrading my camping fridge, and want to go for the dual compartment. Coming from a 40l I'm looking at something bigger. Space is not a big issue, and looking at the price difference between 40l, 56l, 66l, and 72l I'm really considering the 72l.

    40l - +/- R10K
    56l - +/- R12K
    66l - +/- R13,5K
    72l - +/- R13,2K

So for just over R3k I can get 32l extra! But is it worth it? Rand per liter is makes sense ;-)

What is the campers opinions looing at keeping the families food and drinks cold on a overland trip!!

I have 2 NL 90L Twin fridges, and this would be my first choice. Have had them for many years and they tick like rolex, all the time.

The short answer is yes. Bigger is better. We went from the 50l to the 90l and it makes life just that much easier

If fitting the fridge into your van / bakkie etc is not a problem I would definitely go bigger. One can never have too much cold storage space, only too little.

If you go with one of the common brands like Engel, Snowmaster or National Luna, 1 large fridge would always consume less power than 2 smaller ones. Seeing that space is not an issue, size up if in doubt.

I used an 40 lt for many years, and the family grew time came where I needed to add another 40 for freezer or upgrade to on larger fridge. I went snowmaster 85lt dual, and cannot say anything bad about it. Bought it 2019 R8k on black friday special.

If you are planning on leaving it in your vehicle or trailer, go bigger, if you have to lug it around, in and out of the vehicle like me ... then something you can lift without a forklift would be better

Buy as big as you can afford and have space for. Golden rule.

I am not sure about other makes and what make you are considering, but I know with NL the thickness of insulation on the different sizes differ. On the 74L double door, the insulation is thick.

One consideration is the size of the two compartments especially if you want to run one side as a freezer. I commented on another thread that I find the two compartments on a 90 litre NL too similar in size and when I run one as a freezer it is never full and it affects how much I can store on the fridge side. Because of this I end up taking both the 90 in the trailer and a 40 in the car. If the 90 was split was split 70 fridge/20 freezer that would be ideal.

    An example

    The 72 litre NL - 38.2L (left bin) & 33.1L (right bin)
    The 60 litre NL - 24.2L (left bin) + 34.9L (right bin)

Why donít you just get another 40l and keep your existing fridge? That way if you need 80, you have it. You can also have a dual, and naturally if you only need one fridge for a quick getaway then you arenít burdened with the bulk of a big fridge.

The load shedding took my 40L...handed it in for repairs and received an certificate beyond economical repairs.. So my insurance is helping me out with this one!

You never sell a camping fridge. Our set up consisted of only a 74 L double door NL for a very long time. But as my son got older and for longer trips, I needed more fridge space. So we added a 50L Waeco. Must say the combo works perfectly and for just weekends the Waeco is more than sufficient for the meat and drinks and salad stuff.
