Default Crossing the Namib From Kanaan to Meob bay to Walvis bay

I did a Namib trip with my dad , brother and several other family memebers and friends from Patensie the past weekend, I am doing a truip report with 10 - 11 Youtube videos.

The trip was planned for the beginning of April 2020 and because of lockdown was delayed by a year.

We started from Upington on the 10 th of April and drove to Betta camp where we stayed overnight preparing to enter the Naukluft park at Kanaan teh next morning.
The trip started with the badly corrugated road to and through Kanaan.

    Episode 2

Starting from where we had lunch the first day.
The V6 Fortuner had a fuel line between Main and auxilary tank get disconected and he lost a bit of petrol, That repaired we drove up to the small dunes arouind the edges and started crossing them.
There we had a couple of recoveries as drivers started getting accustomed to how their vehicles handled the dunes.

Starting day 2 early we ready ourselves for the days dune driving.
Everything is strapped down in the vehicles to prevent them from bouncing and tire pressures are again adjusted to 0.8 bar.
In the morning this means inflating as they have cooled during the night while during the day as they heat up you have to deflate a couple of times to bring them back down to 0 8 bar.

We did lots of slipfaces , starting with smaller ones and progressing to la couple of huge ones by the end of the day.
As i was driving at the tail end of the convoy the dunes had stopped roaring by the time I went down the slipfaces, but in some of the next videos I think i managed to film a good roar.

On day 3 after having brunch on a dune in the middle of the desert we continue in a north westerly direction as the tide will be too high to do the Langewand , the strech of beach that you can drive only at low tide. This means we have a lot more dune driving to do before the end of the day and the dunes keep getting bigger and bigger, testing our 4x4 vehicles abilities.

The Ocean. we drove along the beach to the Camp with the sun hovering over the horizon, offloaded and there was a quick scramble to offload and get back to the beach to test the fishing waters before the sun sets. Just to see what we are in for the next day.

I decided to just take video, and from our stopping till the first 5 fish was caught took 8 minutes. More importantly than the numbers for me was capturing the emotions , and on this trip there were several who would catch their first fish ever so there were plenty of emotions.

Dunes, bigger dunes and then scary dunes. we spent the afternoon learning how to drive on these Namib dunes.

Another morning of fishing. we had a few Father and sun moments with 2 sets of father and son landing fish simultaneously.
I spent some time talking to PW, his dad owns the "konsessies" and he runs the tours with a bunch of guides helping him.

It was a rather silly thing to do , but i enjoyed it anyway, and the view was worth the climb. On the way back the tide started putting the pressure on.

On our last day staying at Meob baai campsite we decided to go play a bit more in the dunes in the afternoon, so our guides took us for on a different trail.
I had a bit of a take off when my ABS refused to allow me access to the brakes at a critical moment on a dune, If you go there one day, pull the ABS fuse before you play .
No one wanted to quit, so we stayed until the sun set, and then it got very dark very quickly.

I enjoy your videos, thank you. Do you mind sharing what camera you have used?
You don't carry any petrol on the roof, did you take along any extra or is the LR tank in the FJ large enough, giving you the range required for the trip?

GoPro 7 black and my phone

The onboard tank is 159 L , but you are required to take 240L of petrol or 200L of diesel in total . I caried my brothers' fridge and he carried my petrol for my on the back of the Amarok.

I used 178 L of petrol only for the whole trip from Betta to Swakop, 702 km, probably because I mostly only needed 1 attempt per dune. I did try a couple of dunes with little or no run up but if I saw I was not going to make it I did not dig in with the result that I was lighter on fuel than most of the diesels.

I have to add that you have to carry the aditional fuel for emergencies, for example if you get a problem and miss the tide you will have to do a lot more dune driving. We just managed to squeeze through on the tide.
