Default Not the best day for the D4s

So I have two well loved D4s - our 2012 has 250k on it and looks like it’s going in for either turbos or exhaust manifold. Not cheap either way.

Son was pulling our 2017 D4 with 80k into the driveway and diesel was gushing out everywhere. Assuming some high pressure fuel line busted, as it came to a stop when switched off. At least that one is under service plan still.

    what a flipping mess.

Statistically this was bound to happen unfortunately.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune though, not lekker. Hope it works out okay for you.

Aih, my long term D4 Vs 150 TX ownership experience doesn't fully agree with that old saying. I always jump into the 150 for very long trips. Nothing wrong with the D4, but 150 is simply my preferred upcountry companion. I Always feel less fatigued after hundreds of Kms in it than the D4.

Interesting. My experience is the opposite. Brother drives a Prado and I will take my D3 every time if I had a choice between the 2.

My neighbors D4 burst into flames two weeks ago on his way back from Eiland towing his caravan. Luckily the fire was put out by a taxi driver (yes a taxi driver) before it got into the cabin. I think you are lucky yours did not ignite the diesel on the turbo.

It was certainly smoking - was running all over the exhaust headers as far as I can tell. Any idea what caused your neighbors D4 to combust?

Aw, don't fret, Koebelwagen told me where to get a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in .458

On second thoughts, a B/B gun will do.

No concrete evidence, engine bay was totally destroyed by the fire. It happened when the engine was under severe load, passing a truck, slight uphill with caravan in tow. No warning, he just saw flames coming over the windscreen, engine was still running and burning when he parked on the side of the road.

Yes, rather replace the car than live with a complex machine that has been rebuilt.

And it was probably worth more as a write off than if he tired to sell? I love my 312k km amarok, but I am pretty sure that if it was written off for any reason the insurance would be worth a lot more than I could get for it on trade in at this point, so I shall continue to drive it until it dies. Just done a splendid trip to Mazeppa Bay on the far side of the transkei and loving it.

Very Sorry for Heyhaw et al re the disco 4's but I suspect that he is at least in the fortunate position of being able to afford the repair.

In my experience the Turbo started running out of balance hence the red triangle warning light on the dash, then finally the Turbo shaft snapped and the oil pumped from the engine directly down the red hot exhaust. The manual states report to your nearest dealer when this warning appears, unfortunately I was in the middle of Namibia and the grand finale of the turbo croaking was 10Km out of Kuraman.
Landrover replaced the engine and I traded the vehicle in for a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3l Diesel Trailhawk that has a Euro6 engine. what a bargain and what a great tow vehicle.

I own 3 D4-D's and sold 3 already above 200k KM and still no issues other than services , brakes and tires.
I think the owners should not use cheap and dirty diesel - but alas, it is not the only reason, the dealer's technicians mess up numerous times

Sorry to hear from your bad experience @heyyahhey

You can get a recone Turbo for around R13K. much cheaper than a new one. I done it a couple years agon on my 2010 Discovery with also 250K km and never had a issue with the recon one.
