Manners and respect can be relatively exclusive. That thing about respect, as far as I'm concerned, is that it is earned. I don't automatically respect somebody because:

    a: they're older.
    b: they're the dominee.
c: all the other supposed requirements.

I'll respect them when they've earned it from my perspective. This does not necessarily mean I'm going to be miserable to them or impolite. I'll be very polite to them (that is the manners thing). I'll be very polite to them until they give me reason not to be (ie: when I decide they're not worth respecting).

After that, I don't worry to much about formalities like being polite.
I get your point Ian, but maybe there are two different kinds of respect. One that is earned, as you say, and another just a general respect for or in society. To give an example of the second kind to which I refer is for example not playing loud music at a campsite; or behaving oneself when meeting new people, especially if ladies are present. That kind of thing. Included in that is not implying to me, a customer, that another phone call is more important than mine...

Rob - my comment was more aimed at the comment about respect and manners missing from today's society.

I hear your comment entirely, but my point of view differs a little. I see your "respect for society" thing as being considerate to other people. Put plainly, just having good manners.

In any case, I think we're on the same page but we're arguing over semantics.

Included in the respect to which I refer, Jan, is spelling someone's name correctly

Edit: I agree with your last statement; I stopped reading after you spelled my name wrong...

    Bang nooit, versigtig soms.

By all the liefie and discussing who's coming over for a braai Friday night it was clearly a personal call. After more than a minute he started telling liefie that he has to go now because a customer is on the other line, I waited a while longer and then just hung up.

    Baffling.
I can tell you the thinking, and by no means do I agree with it. They reckon 'you are already there' while they are trying to get the person on the phone into the shop....

...and while he is in the shop ignore him to answer the phone again

Laat my nou dink aan 'n ding met 'n pel van my 'n paar jaar terug.
Marius se vrou is 'n mediese dokter.
