Mittal has just killed the steel market with their May 2021 price increase!

In our line of work we find an accute shortage of chipboard of all grades.

Also received notification from our galvanizers that there is a shortage of hydrocloric acid uses in the galvanizing process.

    It just gets worse!

We are not the only country in the same position. Some are learning and taking action to bring back production from China. Depending on product companies are trying to source parts and raw materials from multiple countries. Problem is fronting. Supplier might be in Mexico but the product is coming from China.

Our industry was run down and now we pay for it.

I hope they run out of black BMWs.

Some camping equipment - deliveries of even the locally produced seem slow.

The steel shortages of even the most common sizes of flat bar and angle iron is "'n skande"!

From being a prime exporter of steel, we rely in recycled scrap imports from China. We truly have been captured.

    I paid R280 for
    50x50x3 a year ago.
Look as these prices now. And there’s already a notice out that May prices will go up.

I don't look so much at it as a shortage rather that the value of currency is becoming so worthless that companies can't buy enough stock.

First ISCOR is sold to Indian fellow Mittal who has specific reputation
Secondly the world is allowing China to buy cheap dollars using slave/semi slave labor by supplying under priced steel
Recycling of steel is OK but when material cert for the imported steel is highly questionable then there is a BIG issue.

All our flats, round bars and standard plates used to be local. We imported only specials.

Fortunately somebody did get some brain wave and the rolling plant near Witbank (old Highveld) was taken over and it is running. Our heavy rolled steel sections are based on totally outdated sizes. Try to build a steel structure when the columns are 5 mm different to common size today.

We should not have any shortage what so ever on "commercial" quality steel or on lower end of the low carbon steel. All of which is used on light steel construction. No shortage on pipes upto about 6 to 8" seamless and welded upto what ever in carbon steel. In stainless there was also production. Valves, forgings what ever excluding specials were local. There is nothing in those products that we do not have in the country. I think we have somewhat shortage of Nickle for SS but if I remember right Zim has enough. I have been on many of the production plants.

Currently I am involved with couple difficult projects. All the parts could be made locally but most probably some will be coming from outside. It is really sad and upsetting.

Not many can compete with Chinese when they use slave labor, currency manipulation, stealing of technology and substantial bribes. Their factories are running but no containers. Hopefully they will run into labor problems and run out of money. Chinese economy is actually in deep debt situation.

I sent query to Unilever for Sun dishwashing powder. Within an hour I did get reference number. As it was weekend no actual answer. This morning:

    "Dear Jouko

Thank you for contacting Unilever customer service.

Please be advised that we are currently experiencing a backlog at our factory. However, the product in question has not been discontinued and will be back on the shelves soon.

    Kind Regards,
    Consumer Engagement Centre"

Not bad. This is a sample how things should be handled. Unilever could have given expected date but still attending to a query is the right thing to do.

Less than a month ago SWAMBO bought some form of preserved fruit in a glass bottle. It was abnormally hard and not eatable. She sent a polite complaint and a courier brought replacement plus other products from the company.
