    Default Product shortages in SA

Guys is it just me or do we have some problems with product supplies. I have enquired on a few things and I battle to get my hands on them.
    1. I want to have a hunting rig made for my bakkie. Supplier says no steel. And he says steel prices are allmost double than a year ago
    2. I want A-line steel rims. No stock and they dont know when it will be available again.
    3. Factory ammo for my 308. Scarce and hellish expensive. I cant find s&b.
    4. Stock shortages on some new cars.

Is this all because of covid?

There were Supply Chain delays last year, major ones. This could still be hampering some products. You need to keep in mind that while we are at our current level, other countries are in the middle of a lock down or 3rd or 4th peak, which might also affect some products and industries.

There could also be some risk aversion and suppliers have reduced stocks, preferring to wait till they get an order before placing one on their supplier. But this would be in particular industries and at the cost of a lost sale.

I have to admit that even while doing a shop for groceries, the shelves are full but the variety seems to be less. And while we have a large population, we are still a backwater regarding volumes and if manufacturers have reduced their volumes, they can move more in other markets.

    I am selling appliances.

We have very limited stock with containers continuously delayed and some ETA's in two months time.

Some less common or special medicines - especially imported. (I suspect Covid related transport issues here).

... for about a year now angle iron supply has been erratic both wrt availability and limited size range etc
... and Im told theres a prevailing scarcity of new gas bottles eg 48kg LPG.
Retailers of many items , under Covid market pressures, also seem to have drastically reduced on-shelf stocks.

With regards to 3 remember that there are three factors here.

One the American public loves an apocalypse so with covid and potential lock downs the American gun owning public went wild with ammo purchases.

Then every time the Dems win an election the American gun owners go on a spending spree lest the firearms laws change and they can no longer purchase their chosen weapon and ammo.

Lastly many of the factories have been working alternate shifts or at reduced capacity to mitigate the spread of Covid. I would guess that this also affects factories producing products in your 1, 2 & 4 as well.

With regards to imports the guys in the industry would have far better knowledge than me but from what I hear from clients, the clearing process is slow because the various authorities are also working alternate shifts and of course in the usual display of Gubbermint excellence covid is a good excuse for any poor performance.

    Belgian beer.

If you're lucky, still Hoegaarden, but Leffe has been missing for a couple of months now.

And don't believe Makro when they advertise online that a specific branch has it. Not in Pretoria, anyway. Been there, done that.

I think we not noticing how inflation is eating away our money. And I'm not just talking about SA here. Something is up but I can't put my finger on it.

Anyway as some of you know I've been playing around with resin lately. Since December the prices have shot up by 60%

And onto another topic I doubt I will see any form of an increase this year.

I am finding it hard to keep stock. Luckily between major manufacturers (Goodyear, Dunlop, Firestone) I am able to keep [B]something[B] in stock. Also Chinese imports are difficult to get and slow to replenish when they run out

From what I hear about local manufacturing, people are abusing Covid as an excuse. They get a runny nose and phone in sick. Now they wait to see if they are showing symptoms.

If they go for testing, the government institutes give a letter saying they were NOT tested, but assumed to be positive...

In this current economic climate, MIBCO just sent through new rates (increases) averaging between 4 and 7 percent. That at a time when retrenchments is still a real possibility

One of the budget speech points was that there will be a moratorium on government employee increases untill the 2023/2024 tax year.

Working for an SOE untill 2 weeks ago, I can confirm that we did not get one last year either.

So my remaining colleagues are earning 2019 salaries, or some months, 50% of it.

But I am sure some government employees would be more equal than others.

World wide problem. Containers are in wrong places.

On our area water pipe was damaged. Substantial area has no water. First they say they cannot weld because the pit is too wet. Now JHB water cannot weld "There is a supply problem. They do not have welding rods"

It is not only availability issue. It is also serious lack of forward planning.
