Default URGENT Help/Advise needed - VIN Number on 416 Mog

    Hi Guys

    I have a huge problem.

I have a 416 Mog that is sold, and the car's VIN number differs from the one on the Natis.

VIN Number on the car is 41616210088304.

Apparently (or rather I suspect) that this is an EX - Army VIN number, it shows NO records whatsoever on either the SAPS or eNatis system.

SAPS doesnt want to clear this, and if I start the process of re-introducing it, this will be a potentially lengthy one.

The Mog was bought as a complete unit in 2010, Previous Owner then replaced the chassis with another one (the number above) in 2019, and thats where the hassle lies - there is NO record of that particular chassis.

    1) Can anyone "decipher" this VIN Please??

    2) If indeed an ex Army chassis, who do I contact to get this cleared, or get details on the chassis??

I'm sitting here with a red face with a vrot egg all over it........PLEASE try assist.

    Sorry to hear this, Petri.

From my experience almost impossible to get sorted quickly!! Best option would be to find the old chassis and cut and weld the original number in. Not ideal, but..........

    Good luck!!!!

    Found this forum thread:

    https://www.benzworld.org/threads/un...ecode.2276722/

Inputting the WDB in front of the VIN as suggested by them, I get this:

    But thanks anyway.

Hi hi I had a similar issue re vin nos with my old Pajero. What sap in george told me to do was have the new number stamped on a plate and welded to the chassis where old number was.
Solved the problem to everyone's satisfaction

    Petri

The VIN number you posted looks legit.

The 416162xxx is the series of mogs commonly used by the military (also formed the base for the Buffels).

Normally mog VIN numbers are 14 digits long, so your number seems complete.

Doesn't help with your registration issues, but at least you know the VIN number is correct...

To add to my previous post - I only now read the bit about the previous owner replacing the chassis.

Why on earth would he need to replace the chassis?

Unfortunately, I think you're in for some pain...

If the new chassis comes from an old Buffel (which I suspect is the case) - it's possible that the chassis was never registered on the Natis system, in which case you have lots of work to be done

Not all Buffels were registered on Natis.

You're spot on Paul, it is an ex Buffel chassis.

And they dont want to introduce it on eNatis, because its an ex-military chassis.

But there's NO record of that VIN Number......I do have the original Invoice where the chassis came from etc etc, but they wont introduce it.

They also dont want to stamp unique (saps) numbers, because the chassis number (the "wrong" one) IS on there, and it hasnt been tampered with.

Solution, according to one Official?? Get a chassis with papers and put that on the Mog. Like its a half our job.

What pisses me off - there's NOTHING "wrong" with the VIN Number, it just doesnt have any record.

Its like a piece of scrap metal.

Then why just not put a SAPS number on it

My suggestion is to phone Pon Steyn Motors in the Strand/Gordons Bay are. They sold a lot of the old Army mogs and that would be good place start. From what you have been telling us, I doubt if you will get that vehicle registered. The SAP is very tough on these issues and you have to trace all previous owners and get affidavits, you are lucky it is not reported stolen. Then they would have confiscated you vehicle immediately.

Thanks Johan, I'm really trying to explore every possible avenue here.

Thing is, it's not reported stolen or nothing - I have the Natis here, in my name.

Issue came up when I wanted to export it, only then did I see the physical VIN Number isnt on there, the other one is (ex Army).

There's NO record of that Chassis number, whatsoever. If only there WAS one, so that one could then "trace that record".

But for now, as we speak, its registered, licenced, everything.

But its not "right" - that Chassis Number needs to be changed on Natis.

    VERY frustrating.

Petri congratulations on your ethics - I commend you.

I think these days itís too easy for guys to take an easier more dishonest route being the easy way out here.

I think many people would have made a plan by just restamping the chassis to match the e-natis.

    Well done on your ethics.

Since the VIN number forms the basis of identifying a vehicle in SA this is pretty much the only (legal) way to get the mog legalised. Find a registered chassis somewhere and transfer everything across to the new chassis. Definitely a bit more than a day's work though...

This is what the previous owner should have done in the first place when he swapped the chassis.

Indeed, the moment it goes out of RSA you will have issues. Still speak to a few people in the industry and if you cannot change or fixit, make peace with the fact. You have to tell any owner buying from you as he will not be a happy camper when his vehicle is impounded. Let me know if you could get help. Sure Pon Steyn will at least give closure. The used to buy a lot of Ex-army vehicles. Also saw a "Moffel" in Reibeeck Kasteel. Without mine protection.
