Default We need to define what exactly “camping” is.

If I take all the camping accounts I follow on social media.. it seems that the word camping can be anything from staying in a chalet in Golden Gate to roughing it in a permanent tent in a private game reserve..

I feel camping is when you set up your own tent or hammock..

What do you think camping is?

Maybe at the end of this thread we can post a definition of the word “camping”

Any form of " overnight" without using a pre erected facility for shelter...

Staying in a Safari tent erected by others for others is therefore not camping....

Don’t blame yourself over past mistakes. It’s like driving down the N1 while looking in the rear view mirror only.

I can tell you what camping is not

Camping is not when you venture out of your comfort zone called home and spend buckets full of money to try and recreate all the comforts you have at home at your remote location.

For me camping is being a minimalist to really experience the beauty of nature up close and personal by being part of it.

    This.

I would include caravanning / camping trailers as well.

The amount of "roughing" it, has nothing to do with it.
Using a 2-man tent or a 20 ft caravan are both camping, IMHO.

Do you not think one needs to differentiate between camping and caravanning? Not simple.

How long is a piece of string?

Different strokes for different folks. Some understand camping as temp staying outdoors in a tent with minimal amenities while others prefer certain luxuries they have at home.

Tenting, caravanning etc fall under the umbrella term camping.

To add: camping is a leisure activity. Leisure differs from one person to another.

So once the term has been defined or not, then what?

I struggle to see the point of this quest

With our tent, stretchers, cooler, and doggie the wife and I believe we're camping. Oh, and zero city lights, not even on the horizon.

Take Addo Elephant National Park as an example. Their chalets is not camping, their rest camp wether one uses a tent a caravan or you sleep above or in your car is camping. My opinion anyway.

I thought looking what is commonly acceptable definition. No agreement on that. One give:
"the activity of spending a holiday living in a tent."

If you pitch up your tent on you backyard fulfills that definition.

In caravan parks I have seen about everything but electric fence around a camp site.

We do not camp. We take a trip.

Staying in a Kruger rondawel is more rustic than camping in a new modern caravan 😂

Same goes for what is camping and what is overlanding.

camping to me is sleeping in a tent, be it ground or vehicle mounted.

caravanning is just that, sleeping in a caravan.

overlanding is NOT going away for the weekend and camping, that is camping
