I would replace all 4 the 2 correct one's might die tomorrow. I had no problem in removing GP's on my Suuz so I presume for the Toy it should be ok, just use the correct tool

Glow plug advice please.
I have 2 faulty glow plugs on my 2003 3.0D Toyota – 210 000 Km resulting in some rough idling on initial start-up.
Cylinders 1 & 2 measures .8 Ohm and cylinders 3 & 4 measures about 3 Ohm.
Using V=I*R formula, I know I must replace glow plugs for cylinders 3 & 4 but have the following questions:
- Do I replace all 4, or only the 2 “dead” ones?
- What caused the 2 glow plugs to die on 210 000 Km? I have an Isuzu with 638 000 Km that still starts first time every time.
- Is it really that difficult / risky to remove the glow plugs? Toyota quoted me 4 hour’s labour to do the job. Removing the intercooler to test the glow plugs was straight forward and easy, but I have heard that it might be tricky to remove them with a risk if it breaking in the cylinder head?
Thanx
Pieter

Hi
Just be careful when you remove them, they might have some carbon on them which can make it difficult to remove. I had it once, used lots of penetrating oil and removed over a couple of days. Turn until the resistance is too high, spray oil, turn them back in a bit. Long process, but I was too worried about breaking them.
Cheers

Thanx for the replies
I guess replacing all four wouldn't be that much more work than replacing just two seeing that the intercooler etc needs to be removed anyway.
I`ll give it a go and hope not to break one. Seems like slow and gentle with enough patience and penetrating oil will be the way to go.
Thanks

Don’t blame yourself over past mistakes. It’s like driving down the N1 while looking in the rear view mirror only.
