    Default Passport Renewals

I have screwed up. Seriously... I was aware that my passport was expiring in February, and it was on my list of things to do. However, with all the lock-down confusion, and various things not working and similar, I could not originally renew it. And then I sort of forgot about it... And then, on the 23rd of Febrary, it expired. Which leaves me with a mess, as I've been asked to put a trip together to Namibia with fairly fixed dates...

Sadly, there are no time-slots available for the bank biometric things, so I'll brave the queues at DHA on Friday.

I last applied for a passport for myself 10 years ago (obviously), and the last passports I applied for were for my kids. My ex-wife applied for hers at the same time, and I was blown away with the very short turn-around time (less than a week).

Sadly, with the COVID lockdowns and similar, I doubt that this is going to be the same, and hence this post. Does anybody know what the average turn-around time for passport renewals currently is ?

    Hi Ian

Your passport renewal is a full re-application in any case. Our passports do not technically get renewed..

I have the same issue (Mine expired in March) and have found this out by searching the various government websites.

The times I am getting from the various guys are about 2 to 4 weeks, depending on where you do it.

The mission is to get into the building, to actually have it done..

Let me hope this is the case. That is well within my timeframes.

Christa, I've checked every FNB branch in various provinces.

The only place which had a spot was in Limpopo at Burgersfort.

Their choice of branches for these things is also really weird. An FNB branch in Burgersfort does biometrics, but not any one in Polokwane ? Weird...

I've got to be out Brits side for a school thing later this week. I will give it a bash there. Alternatively I'll try a DHA branch in Shoshanguve or Garankuwa (I know where it is, but not the branch name). That place used to be very efficient back when I used to work in the area.

Ag darn. If I may ask one more question: how far ahead did you check for FNB openings?

Their web-app only allows one to look ahead for about two weeks.

I'm sure it would be possible to bypass this limitation.

However, since that would be frowned upon, I didn't try.

I'll see what the home affairs office in Brits looks like early Friday. And hold thumbs...

Edit (don't ask): Pretoria East has no slots between now and end April. Centurion Lifestyle has slots starting from the 8th of April.
Edit (second one): Although entering either start or end date field will popup a date selector, the input field still allows dates to be specific by the keyboard. So, no - I did not do anything that could be frowned upon.

Assuming a 4 week turnaround, the 8th of April in Centurion will be too late for me. I'll go into a DHA branch.

Ag no. I was under the impression this was all sorted out now that we could do it through the bank?
mines also expired, but Iíve been quite relaxed about it thinking when the time comes Iíll pop into the bank and get it sorted painlessly.

Thanks for this thread, it reminded me to do mine which expired at the end of Feb.
I'll do the FNB thing since it's not urgent, I don't have a trip coming up or anything, but I might as well get it done now.

Graham - one can do it through the bank. The biggest issue just is the available slots. There is a huge backlog.

If you're not in a rush, you're sorted. I need to get mine renewed by the end of March to fit in with time-lines.

Is it possible to download the forms to apply for a smart ID and a new passport, respectively? Or are they only available at a Home Affairs branch?

I have had a look on line, but I can't seem to find anywhere that allows you to download?

I'm in KZN, so I will have to visit a branch.

Got my last Green Mamba at Benoni central in Oct 2017. Took 10 days. But of course, things may have changed since then. Benoni DHA is quite small, queues went out onto the street. I seem to remember around 3 hours for application then another 3 to collect.

applied for my passport renewal at ABSA (Sandton City) on the 17th of March, got a message today that its ready for collection

PS I waited in the que (comfy chair) for about 20mins (but then I arrived at 10:50 for my 10-11 appointment slot) and my renewal took all of 5mins to complete

Can you only do the renewal in a bank if you bank with that particular bank?

Someone mentioned on Facebook that the online bookings to go to a bank branch are currently not available?

Right. A bit of feedback. After a harrowing time at two home affairs offices, I got an appointment at the FNB in Centurion for today 11h00.

I was there early to find that their systems were down. Hung around a little, got their telephone number and headed back to Pretoria East. I called later the afternoon, their systems were up. Entire process took a few minutes, apart from the drive to and fro.

We will now see how long before the application is processed and I have my new passport in hand, but I am confident things should pan out well.

I believe you can only do your applications at banks you have accounts with. However, since this is the first time I'm applying in this manner, I have no idea. My payments were made from FNB, and the only options I have for branches are FNB, so I guess it is so.

Did my renewal at Nedbank Arcadia, Pretoria, in 2019 and at no stage did they enquire about where I bank. It's just a Home Affairs satellite office inside the banking hall.
