    Default Tyre shortage

Is their a shortage of tyres?

I've been trying to buy a set (4) of Bridgestone's 215/60 R16 for the wife's Honda HRV but nothing available till end of April.

Won't be surprised. With the world-wide lock downs, shortages in many sectors are experienced.

My mate couldn't get 17" Goodyear or General tyres in the Mosselbay area. Had to settle on Dunlop.
So yeah, it does seem as if not all brands and sizes will be available all the time.

Firestone is available, Bridgestone, no stock and no ETA. Goodyear is available...

There is a huge shortage. Plants are not running at full capacity due to Covid-absence or alleged Covid-absence. Some manufacturers are trying to compensate by importing from factories in other continents. This should see prices increasing significantly soon.

Oh, and Goodyear is having an unprotected 'down-tools'...fun times.

Ja, if someone has Covid-like symptoms, you don't really want them at work. Chance they might spread the disease. They know you cannot take the chance. No surprise that it is being taken advantage of by some...

There is a world wide shortage of natural rubber. For some reason, the price for rubber is too low, so a lot of famers have changed to palm oil.
Millions of people in have bought cars rather than relying on public transport, in order to protect themself from Covid, in China and the rest of the world, increasing the shortage of rubber and tyres.

Just been down the same road and exact same size with our Forester.

Depending on the use of the CRV maybe consider 225/55R16.

Our Forester is mostly an in town mommy wagon with occasional dirt road use and I decided to go with the above size in a Dunlop sport road pattern (FM 800).

Road handling, feel, noise etc is all way way better than the OEM Yokohama Geolandars in 215/60R16.

For most people, that extra bit of safety on the road is probably more important than the 6mm of ground clearance that you lose.

Strangely had no problem getting 275/65x17 settled on the Dunlop Grandtrek AT3G which surprised me when fitting with how bulky they are with big Lugs not apparent from the photos on the Dunlop site for less than R3500 each and 3 ply sidewalls. Weekend in the mud on farm easily delt with.

Apparently also no General Grabbers anywhere to be found, I know someone at the factory, and he says they definitely building them. So I am not sure why the shortage.

We had a similar problem earlier this year. we needed 4 Duratrac 255/55/19 s for our land rover. We were also tole end of April.

I was referred to Palm tyres in Maitland. Lo and behold they had 4 in stock. And not old stock.

    May be worth a try.

I went looking for 235/65/17 today. Fairly common size IMO.

My go-to supplier said that they really didn't have any options for me since there was no stock, might take a week or two. Very strange.

    Good day All.
We had to replace tyres a while ago and no Korean tyres available. Tried the vulcanising guys in PE (Save a Tyre) and they recommended Chinese made Mirage tyres. I was shocked at the price R1500 per tyre (235/60/18)
Best tyres I have ever had on a car and ours is over 200 000km

Easy to balance and as we live on a bad gravel road I was scared for the sidewalls as we have had plenty of cuts over the years. 20 000odd km later and not one punter or sidewall yet. Running at 1.8 bar.

    Cheers,

    Trevor

Well, I can confirm. I have been looking for two General Grabber AT 15inch tyres since January and the factory said that the MAY have stock again in June 2021.
I am really stuck as I need 2x spares for an upcoming trip end of April.
I may have to buy 2 spares of a different brand and then continue with that brand when it comes to replacing..
