So vertel gou vir ons hoe ry julle nou?

Julle het Tinkie en die twee 130's en een treiler. Ry een van die 130's?

Wat sleep die treiler, Tinkie of een van die 130's?

I don't know. Point is one cannot drive fast for starters. Highway is a quite a few extra kilos, Gauteng traffic for 80km and plenty of toll roads.

And perhaps we are just inclined to more adventurous routes.

This was one very memorable trip.

    OK Oaks.

This purchase was a very interesting one. I picked up these two vehicles that for some reason never showed up in the adds in spite of me checking 5 times a day in various ways.

Then all of a sudden the one popped up on Facebook. I followed the link and clicked on the profile of the advertiser, only to see TWO vehicles with different year models.

Immediately suspicious, I checked again and saw that they have different number plates, and I phones as early as I could phone Monday morning bordering on being rude.

The owner told me he is working from dusk till dawn and that there are oaks coming to look over the easter weekend.

I asked him if he would have a problem if I come visit him that very evening.

And so it happened that I cancelled ALL my plans, phoned a friend and asked him if he can come with, got a trailer, hitched it behind Tinkie and off we went.

It was a bloody long trip.

Long story short, we eventually got at his home and I started checking out the two vehicles. It was clear they were in need of attention, but had loads of potential.

I noted the 2002 model was a little skeef, and quickly confirmed that it is a Code 3, but at least TD5. This one is called Jagsbakkie.

The 2005 model is actually in very good condition, but fitted with a Lexus V8 that obviously will have to be plukked ASAP. No name for this one yet. Probably Stink Tanky.

I was not sleeping much on Monday night, and evaluated the deal over and over with the intention to go the next morning and make him and offer for the one, or the other, or more money if I take both.

So I went to check them out again yesterday morning at 7:30 and in the light we saw the cars are not bad, but not ready to get to Bloem.

As I sat at the kitchen table figuring out how to word my offer, I just realised I have to take both. I made my offer for the two. And he raised it. In classic fashion, neither me nor him was happy so we had a deal. I paid the money.

Now we have to get to Bloem and I saw the state of neglect will certainly make this an interesting trip.

We did some emergency repairs, which included dosing both cooling systems with 4 litres of 96% antri-freeze, as this raise the boiling point a few degrees. I had to take out the file to make the radiator cap on the expansion tank of the Lexus one seal and I had to butcher some enjine oil into the front differential of the Lexus one as it was near empty and we had nothing else.

Jagsbakkie have a broken CV at the one front end, so the front prop was removed and the CDL pulled. Rear wheels only from now on. Also, the engine mountings on this one are FUBAR so you need to be really smooth with the gear changes.

With no EMS system on board, I was obviously a little nervous, but I reminded myself that Land Rovers usually break at a convenient place.

And so we took the road. From the word go, Jagsbakkie soon showed me underneath she is good.

For those who have never towed with a Defender 130, dare I say that it runs even MORE stable than a Disco 3 if that is at all possible. Apart from the fact that there is much less power, I can simply say that the heavy trailer had totally zero effect on the handling, even on some very broken tar.

As we went along then, I simply realised that Code 3 or not and the RHS door of this car nor closing properly, we just have to keep her. As rough around the edges she is, there is simply no double cab that that exists that had the space, stability, off road capability and load carrying capacity this vehicle can offer.

In the same fassion, the Lexus ran like star.

So I toyed with the idea to sell Tinkie. But when we finally dropped the two 130's and I got back in her, she just flippen showed me again that she sets her own benchmark.

Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh!!! So it seems, four Landies it will be. The only vehicles I ever had of which I could sell none.

But... The two 130's is a crucial find for our family. We aim to go self reliant within a few months time, and what better platforms to give us this kind of support.

    Plans for these two vehicles:

For the moment, it seems just to get them well repaired and reliable.

The Lexus one will probably get an Auto box. As for the 3-Amigos, not immediately. We have a lot of work on our hands now just to get them road worthy and on my name.

Oaks. I am bloody tired tonight. Lets face it. A Defender is an awesome ride, but it does give you a workout.

My upper legs are rubber. I need to get Defender fit again.

    Geniet daai lorries!

Phew. I am busy going over some basics and we really have our work cut out for us on these two babies.

I am considering taking at least two weeks unpaid leave so that we can get on with it and get it done.

There really is enough work that it will work out cheaper this way.

I love the irony of you leaving with a D1 and trailer to collect 1 driving and 1 not driving Defender, and arriving home with 2 driving Defenders and a dead D1.

Shoo, I dunno, I always found my defender one of the most comfortable vehicles for long distance travel, never got sore anywhere, it was actually amazing.

Believe me Sir, this was one of the toughest towing exercises I have ever done. Plenty of gear changes and braking.

The D1 was not dead. I only had one extra driver and we had three cars. Both Defenders were driving.

I think it is stupid to put Defender 130 behind a D1.

    Arrangements are taking shape now.

I will move over to a workshop with a Lift this weekend, that we can use for as long as we need.

I also organised some extra hands. Two friends one of who volunteered as he knows nothing about cars and want to learn, as well as good friend who need some desperate help to make ends meet.

    And of course my son.

The roof liner of Jagsbakkie is filthy, so I will take that out, paint it with PVA and then the GF can use that as a canvas to paint something nice to give the car a personal touch.

Totally agree. Would not ever recommend or even attempt town driving in my 130. Just feels like you are going on holiday when you get in it.

I agree that the combo you had was the more logical choice.
