    Camera placement remains vital!

You will see (or not ) that most shopping centers, security installations, secure housing complexes and toll gates all have a dedicated camera at the entrance, normally about headlight height and positioned perpendicular to the approaching traffic just for vehicle number plates.

a Descent camera will then also capture images of the occupants.

With most normal systems you need to decide whether you want to monitor movement or identify people/vehicles. Both are not always possible.

Hahaha, you can take a robber to the police station and he will still walk around the very next day.

I have a camera system at home as well, but it is purely used to be able to see what is going on around my house, instead of having to wonder or go outside should I hear a noise.

Turns out I suddenly need something too. Intruders in my property last night, broke into the granny flat which we are renovating and stole tools. Bosch power drill, Bosch 18v cordless drill, toolbox with arbitrary tool, Mastercraft socket set. Probably R15k all in. Right now I am ready to harvest some organs of passers by to pay for the tools and the CCTV system.

Assuming the purpose of the expense and trouble of CCTV gear is a successful arrest and prosecution, what use is the standard receding image of some criminal's shoulder-blades, or even a registration plate? Worthless. Ask the keen salesman to produce a typical scene, recorded by his 'de luxe' equipment in typical conditions. The footage must be easily accessible, playable with commonly available lap tops and speakers, and including the ability to produce easily recognisable, clear stills of the gook's face. The installer must also accept the posible need to attend court, to explain the reliability of his device, and how its data was safely downloaded and tamper-free. Otherwise, you are playing

CCTV is usefull after getting intrution detection stuff sorted, stuff like electric fence (primary purpose is perimeter alarm), dogs, yard beams, bypass resistant motor gate and/or whatever else to alert you, so you can then check what is happening from safety of home, unless it's a smart CCTV system that send alerts to phone when seeing a human when it is armed, something like https://foresight-security.co.za.

I have 22 active cameras around my house, so I do believe in the use of CCTV, but got that after having with at least 1 intrution detection system.

Agree, what the imagine shows is enough for a lookout, white Audi A3. These guys change number plates all the time. There is a rarish make of double cab pestering the east of Pretoria with daytime break-ins. For some reason, even with that information, they have not been aprehended.

I like the Hikvision systems, not expensive and for low cost cameras the image and night vision is very good.

As per attached image this footage was from a neighbours house and it help sweet [email protected]#$all ,nada niks from bad quality low spec camera.

Please give me some advice for what spec camera is needed that could capture a proper image where you could at least read the registration number when footage are playback....

Dont want to buy shares in the market just looking for a decent quality camera.
About the quality, what do you want to see? The number plate has a very short lifespan of usefulness.

Anyway, that Audi S3 hit my street (2 houses down, across the road) last Sunday at 13:40 after driving up and down their favourite street to hit a bit.

Like mentioned in post#25,,if not done properly I am playing,,, maybe I should just add xtra beams around the house to secure the outside parameter and connect it to the alarm and if the intruder does try to come in the alarm will wake the whole neighborhood

If you want to see every detail of the criminal in UHD/4K, then it will cost you much more than that system. So what is your budget?

If you want to see whether a person is in your yard or what type of car is parked outside, that would be a sufficient system.

If you you want it to alert you to a humans presence then look at this:
    https://foresight-security.co.za.

My mom is home all day and checks on the CCTV* on her tablet what is going on in the yard, why are the dogs barking, that the motor gate was forgotted open, where is the hooting car (these criminals are known to hoot to try to determine if someone is home, if someone responds they make up a story about looking for a domestic and gives a random name (unless the person is foolish enough to open the gate I guess) , happened in my area the other day, that same car later tired to break in in Waterkloof). The other night she even saw someone had left the sliding door open (with the key inside
so a criminal could have opened the security gate easily) due to the blinds moving in the wind and could alert me to come close it.

*CCTV more like the one from Esquire, an HD Analogue system, easy to DIY system, not an IP camera CCTV system, not a a smart CCTV system like from Foresight. I can track my dogs in their section of the yard, I can track the movement of cats in the driveway, so I will surely see if a person moves around.

    Don't try to overkill it.

You just want to see what is happening around your house in the middle of the night, when the alarm is triggered, and have recordings to go back to.

Your budget will decide how fancy you "need" to go.
Reading number plates you will get from a 2MP AHD camera, if the car is stationary and close enough to the camera, otherwise get a 40m verifocal camera and focus it to a specific distance (+-10m from camera) and you will be able to read it a bit further.

NOW, if you want to read a number plate of a car driving past your house, for that camera you need a totally separate budget.

    Just my 2c
