Looking for some price advice: We are thinking of selling our collector's item very trusty 1991 Land Rover 110 3.5l V8 HiLine station wagon (yes, it is officially a classic).
This is the HiLine that came out in a limited edition (I think only around 150 sold in South Africa), with a 115l fuel tank and galvanised chassis as standard. It has 300 000km on the clock, has been serviced and maintained by LR Services for the past 20 years, and save for a few months when I used it as a daily commute while shopping for a small car, has only been used for long overland trips since we bought it 20 years ago.
It has an African Outback drawer system, full length roofrack with four sleeper Echo rooftop tent, and a metal mesh dog cage separating the cargo area from the passenger area. Licence up to date and valid for a year.
Usual bull bar, tow hook etc. Almost new Cooper STT tyres, and almost new Ironman shocks and springs all round. It's currently not running as the fuel pump packed up and the battery is flat. Otherwise it runs beautifully, and has served us incredibly well on family trips all over South Africa, and to Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Mozambique.
Our kids are now grown up, and my wife and I want to invest in a faster, more modern vehicle, possibly a Pajero or Fortuner, as we are not getting any younger and the comfort will be welcome.
Any idea what a vehicle like this should sell for? It is in all round very good condition, the usual interior wear and tear one would associate with a 30-year-old vehicle.

To add: I will be chucking in an ammo box of spares - new water pump, points, condensor, used water hoses, fan and drive belts, emergency inline fuel pump, coil etc. All the stuff one needs in case of a bush breakdown and emergency repair. Plus a HiLift jack and various other bits and bobs.

Don't do it! I am sure you have considered this and decided it is time, but it is a shame to see one like that go.
I have no idea how, but given the age, you could legally import it to the US? What about putting it on eBay there and seeing what offers you get? Defenders fetch stupid money that side!
Thanks Tony..........VERY nice, love that blue!! There's a green one in town too, Ou Oom sinne.
What ballpark $$$ you looking at?

Petri, I have no idea - I would imagine it is probably worth anything between R50k and R80k but I'm trying to establish what the market is. I really have no clue.
@Stephen Plumb, yes, the idea of the US market is tempting, but frankly, I couldn't be bothered with all the hassle. It has the original 3500 V8 that Land Rover bought from GM (same engine that was in the Rover 3.5 cars with the wings), and is absolutely awesome offroad, but my back and knees now need something a bit more user friendly!

Crumbs Tony, it cant be an easy decision to part with that given the experiences it has facilitated.

Nope, it's like selling a member of the family, or the family dog! And our kids have literally grown up in the Landy, bush camping all over southern Africa. But one has to be realistic... our other family car is a Mitsubishi Outlander, and going on holiday in it, albeit limiting in where one can get to because of it's lower clearance, is an absolute joy - speed, comfort, and an air con that works!

I think your expectations are too low given the current value of defenders. I think you should be looking at +R90k.

Isnt that V8 the Buick developed one?? Think so, but can be wrong. I know its 100Kw, way way downtuned for low down grunt.

I had 2 V8 Defender Pickups.........GREAT cars, my party trick was always idling over a miershoop without one wheel leaving the ground - those suspensions are just unbelievable, and I believe the VERY best still out there

Yup, that's the one. Extraordinary engine. When we are on game drives, I pop it into low range first and let the Landy drive itself - it ambles slowly along at walking pace, the engine is almost completely silent, and my hands are free to take pictures as I steer with my knees. It has never let us down, and has hauled itself out of some very, very difficult situations. Nothing to beat it in thick sand, and it eats up rocks and other obstacles.

I agree - R90k - R100k, because:
- Fully galvanized chassis - worth a LOT of $$$.
- Isn't the firewall also galvanized?
- One owner for last 20 years.
- Service history with 1 company for 20 years
- Its a Defender.
- Defender prices have gone bonkers.
- Age counts for nothing with a Defender.
Yip, that's the engine Buick developed in the early 60's and which British Leyland bought.
Therein lies both advantages and disadvantages:
- + Problems (like slipped liners) well known and easily fixed.
- + LOTS of spares and after market bits available.
- + Proved itself over nearly 60 years of use.
- + Low-down torque that skriks for nothing.
- - HEAVILY down-tuned in the Defender for the torque, so it has that glorious V8 sound on the road but not much oomph.
- - They are fuelaholics.
