Win 10 update - forced on you

If you have older version than 20?? be prepared that you are forced to upgrade. Only way to prevent is to disconnect from the net. I would say:
- Back up 100% and then update
- Assume 1 hour if you have SSD.

I have delayed the update as there have been bigger problems.

After the main update there was an other Windows update, which should have solved the policy change. Did not help. Some driver update did come also.

2 more laptops to update.

If you have version 1909 it will be updated to 20H2 you like it or not.

On one of my old laptops the upgrade ended in a blue screen, had to reinstall everything, good idea to make back ups.

A couple of years ago, I stopped both my laptop and home PC on version 1607, because versions after this broke Samba, which I need for network playback on my Oppo bluray player.

That gives you time to make backups. Max postponement is something like 30 days. In this case might be less.

In general backups are must. At the office in out holiday place one old laptop failed and couple days later power unit on a desktop. I recovered the data from the hard drives last night. SWAMBO did backup of the most critical data previous night on the desktop. She set up replacement computer we had organized as we thought that something may happen. So it did.

We have bought for the office hardware to do back ups. They are not done as often as they should. Very few people do.

It turned out that my spare laptop had already the latest Win 10. I bought it recently (2nd hand HP). Third laptop update went smoothly but took around 2 hours. Plenty memory and SSD. I had to remove Virtual Machine engine. It was outdated and not used at present. I can easily install latest version if needed. At least there was a warning and not like in a past when programs were simply removed without any warning.

Interestingly the two updates worked differently. They were at the same version. This showed again the issue which version was originally installed. When Win 10 is updated the update doesn't necessarily remove something that is not in the later version. This has caused me trouble in the past. Some programs will simply not install on Win 10 edition that has not been updated through several generations. To find out what is missing from the later edition is about no go.

People put so much garbage on their computers, there are bound to be issues with updates and application installations.

Not ONE single PC of mine has ever suffered issues with updates, and my PC's are set to download and update everything automatically.

I know this one guy, who was running two different anti virus applications and still get's viruses. My question to him was: "What ARE you doing with your computer?"

I updated to 20xxx end of last year, so I should be good for now.

I usually download the full update (iso) within a week of the release.

Manual install/upgrade all PCs. Never had any problems.

Currently on 20H2.

I have to install close to 200 programs. Practically all work related. I do many things. Normally I have to reinstall after 2 years of 4 year life of my works laptop. I do not reformat. I buy new HD. Having 1 Tb SSD I may try not to redo installations - expensive. To set up this laptop took over 2 weeks and cost around R70 k in software .
