An inverter welder cannot work from a genset. It will for a short while.
Rent a petrol welder for the job.

I have a bit welding to do at a remote place, but I do have a 160A inverter welder and a 6.5kw Generator, can I do this with out destroying anything? Or should I rather just go and rent a portable petrol welder from a tool rental place?

We use an inverter air cooled welder with a 5kw gen for welding work around the farm....no problem...air cooled welder use only around 0.6 units electricity for a constant 30 minutes welding work with 2.5 rods.. .i do however think you'll run into trouble if you use an oil cooled welder with a gen....
I have done about 3000m of palisade fencing with an Afrox 140 invwerter and managed to stop this baby in the first day. We finished the job with a mig and a 650genset but that was just two 100mm welds every 20 min.
As johan said rather hire a custom unit if you have a lot of welding to do.
