Last time the insurance wrote my car off, I also thought I would negotiate a buyback and fix. But seeing as the car was still standing in my yard, I just withdrew the claim. After that it just cost me the spares and labour to fix.

The previous time was a bit different, they had already picked the car up and taken it to their repairer. I submitted my own quote to repair which was just inside of the writeoff value. But they moaned about the tow in cost which needed to be covered. But I still got 32k cash settlement to fix a drowned engine. Jap import cost me 8.5k, so major score at the end of the day.

So if you have a friend in the business, get him to submit a quote within the writeoff value, and take a cash settlement to effect repairs yourself.

    Seems I can get a D2 TD5 Auto with a buggered gearbox.

Exactly the same colour and interior as mine, so I can build over all the neat parts!

Speak to British 4x4 - they have thousands of Landies in their yard and quite a number of them are D2's.

Maybe Walter at LRX will know of something?

Oh man, that's very sad. I spent almost R40 000, and did some extra work myself (cleaning the intake, checking the EGR, etc.) on my wife's X3 (old 2.0d) getting it tip-top. This was the family traveler. Most of the money went to timely maintenance, the engine was like silk on 200 000km. Part of the cost was R10 000 on tyres, and then a new battery, and barely 2 months after the new tyres (and a few weeks after the new battery), the car spontaneously caught fire after standing for a few days. I managed to limit the fire to the engine bay with quick action, but the car was a write off and the insurance wouldn't let me keep the tyres. I was also stupid to not take out the battery.

I know how it feels, and although this was 2.5 years ago, I'm barely over it.

(P.S. the fire was caused by water in a worn conduit - my suspicion was mice/rats that gnawed it)

Send me a pm with the name of your insurer. If it's one that we deal with I may be able to give you some pointers.

    Hi Biltong

When my D3 met the COW it was also a write-off.

I had alot of xtras and g tyres and rims and ... and ... and most of all just LOVED the G4 D3

So I bought it from my insurance - they basically paid me out less and I kept the car.

I took of all I wanted and then still deciding what to do was made an offer on the engine - a 240,000 km TDV6 .. for more than I paid the insurance so decided to do that.

But for you let the insurance pay you the value out end buy the wreck from them ... just insist it IS possible

    Cheers

Hi Biltong. I feel your pain! Just over 2 years ago My Disco 2 V8 was also written off. I hope you get 'support' from your insurer, and manage to retain the vehicle at a decent buy-back price. Good luck!
