I saw this article this morning and my first thought was someone must have tipped off the police. Why would they specifically target this one boat? Would love to hear the story behind the story!
And it just shows how birds of a feather flock together! Bulgarians and Mianmar sailors!
There is never a right time to do the wrong thing and never a wrong time to do the right thing!
Most likely some well know names in the Cape......so highly unlikely we'll ever find out ?

Whats the fuel range of those trawlers?
I wonder if they had just made a collection and from what? Narco-sub?
Where they in SA waters when apprehended or did they come into port?
I do love a good mystery![]()

It eventually made a minor newspaper report in the early 90's. Intelligence was received of two fishing boats coming from South America allegedly carrying a drug shipment. The SA Navy deployed a submarine with a cop on board (Legal requirement as they were acting against civilians) to intercept them far out at sea and then tail them to see whether the cargo was transferred before they docked in SA.

yeah its a common practise, some intel agency overseas wants it shut down from an agreeable place, they cant do it in South America or Mexico, but they will contact a country that wants the glory and owes them a favour, and doesnt have any alliances to the cartels and gets them to intercept.
Africa is the major distribution point for Coke and Heroin, some might have been offloaded here as payment to local mobs for access or storage, but most likely, its going to Europe, Aus, or China where that load will be worth a lot of money on the streets.
I always wonder how the police manage to catch these guys, how did they target only this boat?
Maybe they are tipped off, so that an even bigger load can slip through. Many mules are tipped off, so that the 2nd mule, 10 rows back can slip through with double the load
Tipped off for sure. There is just too much sea traffic to monitor. Rotterdam, the biggest port in Euro, only checks about 25% of their containers if I remember right. Intel is the key.
Could have also been another cartel, tipping off the cops about this one.
Its most likely the USA or Interpol who tipped them off.
Narco subs are capable of reaching Europe from South America now:

With these type of things I always wonder, where does the loot go and how much will get stolen in the process?
Bribe a couple of cops at the station where the evidence will be kept to make it disappear, they can spend less than 10% of the value of this shipment to give a few guys more money than what they'll earn in their entire police career.
If laptops, cellphones and guns can disappear then so can a couple bricks of coke.

Police seize massive cocaine haul off Saldahna coast in elaborate operation
In an extensive operation led by Western Cape organised crime narcotics unit detectives comprising various tactical operational units, police have seized a massive cocaine haul from a fishing vessel off the Saldahna coast on Monday evening.
The intelligence-driven, evening operation saw various tactical forces descending on the vessel where 973 blocks of compressed cocaine (estimated at R583 million) were found in three compartments of the vessel. Ten suspects were subsequently arrested on charges of dealing in drugs. They are expected to appear in court in Vredenburg soon.
Further investigations continue as the detectives determine the origins as well as the intended destination of the consignment.
SAPS management has hailed the find as a step in the right direction in efforts to deal with the illicit drug trade.
I bet it was 1000 bricks before the news arrived![]()
