The confusion comes partly because post #4 from sunstore Web link displays a charger yet they call it a converter. The units look totally different.

When I started off kitting out the Amarok some 4 years ago, I was a complete novice as far as dual battery systems is concerned. I was also quite apprehensive about doing it myself. So, after some reading (including the Electrickery thread) and some advice on this forum, I opted for the NL DC/DC charger https://www.nationalluna.com/product...or-and-charger combined with the NL Aux. box https://www.nationalluna.com/product...ry-battery-box . This was by FAR the least complicated approach, being "plug and play" and also the complete solution providing for both alternator and solar inputs, and is working perfectly up to this day! So my first reaction would be to highly recommend this. Today you get all kinds of combinations of the NL products that will make it even easier!

But. Since then my knowledge has increase somewhat, and so has my confidence. Hence, if I have to do it again today (and provided I have the money) I would go the Victron route. Although you will now have more separate components (which scared me off initially), and be knowledgeable about which one of the many options you choose, it provides total flexibility and full integration.
What has convinced me, is the joy that I get from using some Victron peripherals, such as an inverter, AC/DC battery charger and a smart shunt. Their integration with the Bluetooth app and the control you have makes it a no-brainer.

If that day never arrives, I am more than happy with the NL setup.

Thanks all for the info. I paid a visit to the Victron supplier and I guess my face just said "I'll probably burn my vehicle down" so the salesman sold me a NL Green Battery box with DC DC charger already built in. Has all the plugs I need and and and.

One day I'll build a nice utility box and buy separate components, but for now this suits my needs

You will be fine with the box - it is easy and convenient to use. Enjoy.

Just to add on some of the errors we see on line. Here the 12/24-12 is shown. The picture gives the output as 30-30V while it is 20-30V. Also the load is shown as 120W while it is 280W.

    You wont regret.
BTW, if you do not have a ac/dc charger for that box, you can start your victron journy by getting a IP65 at a cheaper price than a CTek.

I made the mistake of watching 12v setups last night and now an AC-DC charger is also on my list. I should uninstall Youtube, probably the biggest reason for my budget issues

If you buy a National Luna charger (NL5) it will be able to plug into their green box. Already wired for it (NL5 Intelligent Charger port)

    https://www.nationalluna.com/product...attery-charger

Or, you can buy any other 220V charger and connect it to the battery

Thanks. We're going camping this weekend so will see if 220v charging will be needed. Chances are we'll never camp for more than 2 days at a time

It is in any case a good idea to have a 220V charger. If you are not going to use battery for a while, charge it fully and leave in garage.
And you can charge/maintain other batteries with it as well.

    Feedback from first outing.
My battery is not up to scratch and could only run my fridge and lights for 5 hours to flat (it was 35.2 degrees though), but to be fair, it is an old 75aH AGM.

Are the Optima batteries still worth it or are there better options out there capacity vs cost?

@Jeepman85 - Value for money I would look at the Raylite Solar Silver Calsium 102Ah. Deep cycle but only 50% DOD on a regular basis.
If you were in Gauteng you could have send me a PM for great price for a fresh one

    3. Battery Monitor 712 or shunt?
    4. MPPT

Would this be what one looks at?

I am truly not keen on having to rely on an app - may I assume that I can get around that with the battery monitor 712 rather than the smart shunt?

And will this system be fully Lithium compatible - say with a 218ah Blue Nova?

This is also assuming someone is interested in buying my kidney.
Yeah, the 712 is actually a SmartShunt with extras, will be Lithium ready and can be adjusted manually if you donít want to use the app. Iíd add a Battery Protect to disconnect the loads when battery goes too low.

I don't think it has been mentioned in this thread yet; the DC/DC charger should be close to the auxiliary battery to be sure there are fewer problems with bad connections and/or thin cables.

On the Battery protect. If lead acid i would say it is great. With the BMS of Lithium can one not rely on it to disconnect the load?
