Default Resolved - indy for Golf GTI Cape Town

    Hi,

a friend needs to have the timing chain replaced in her 2006 Golf GTI 2.0 .

The agents ask a small fortune so she needs to consult a reliable independent .

    thanks in advance ,

Contact Ferroli Performance Centre. They specialise in VW products. They've worked on my Golf 2.0 TDI Sportline and Amarok. Honest, reliable and with good rates. They are based in Killarney Gardens - 021 556 6567

I'll second Ferroli's but just keep in mind that replacing that chain is a big job. It won't come cheap no matter who does the job.

Ferrolli's will be good, but also pricy. They more of a tuning shop.

I can recommend Positive Power if you happy to give them a bit of time to do the job (small workshop)

    Can call Anton 082 414 4104.

Contact Jamiel at http://www.j2auto.co.za/ in ottery.

Workshop looks a bit dodgey to some, but his work is amazing and specializes in VAG cars.
He sorted out my Audi when it decided to blow its DSG gearbox at a fraction of the price.

Is it not the EA888 motor?

I was under the impression in 2.0l form in the GTi they always had a chain. Something new learnt!

Nope, the 2 litre chain engines in the Golf were first introduced in Golf 6

i only have the vin which is AAVZZZ1KZ6U017944 . Perhaps there is a parts lookup site that can identify the engine type ?

Engine cover says FSI turbo . This guy talks about golf 5 fsi and timing chain but maybe thats not a local model https://youtu.be/KEnOsmgOZrU

Yes, the Golf 5 GTI has both a toothed belt and a timing chain.

Toothed belt to drive the exhaust camshaft from crankshaft, and at the back of the head (Gearbox side), you will have a cover wherein the timing chain runs, connecting the exhaust camshaft with the inlet camshaft.
Note that it also has a chain driven oil pump and balancer shaft unit.

See attached picture and data file

FYI: Have a look at the engine number on the license disk. VW and Audi engines are easily identifiable by the first 3 letters of the engine number, eg. AXX12345 or BWA12345 etc. Being a GTI, it should be a AXX, BPY or BWA engine.

Hope this might help a bit
