Question Motorised jockey wheel for boat trailer

Hi, does anyone where I might buy a motorised jockey wheel to move my boat a 5.2m infanta SRI, about on gravel driveway with slight gradient? Or better ideas perhaps? Tony

There is someone up JHB way that makes them. I have worked on 2 of these units and they are honestly not worth the money spent on them. Far better to make your own. It is not that difficult.

Basically you need a frame to accommodate a largish battery, place to mount the winch, some bearing carriers, axle, wheels, and some kind of handle.

You buy a 12V boat winch and remove the cable. You use the shaft the cable was wound around to mount a small sprocket. Mount the bearing carriers under the frame, through which the axle is passed. A larger sprocket is fitted to the axle between the bearing carriers. Fit a hub either side of the axle, and a handle on the opposite side, and you're virtually good to go. Use the controls the winch comes with to drive it.

Just a note on the wheel. The manufactured ones I mention in the outset have very small wheels, probably 150mm diameter at most. These will not propel your boat, even on a paved surface. The wheels need to be much larger and Quad wheels work well.

I will try to hunt down some photos of the ones I have worked on. Will give you a basic idea of what is required.

That will NOT move a 5.2M duck on a gravel surface! That wheel is far too small and will stand spinning in one place until the cows come home.

This is the only photo I have unfortunately, but it gives you a rough idea.

This is the boat the client was wanting to move, on a paved surface.

And this is how useless it is with little wheels.

This is the basic drive mechanism, from the winch directly to the axle.

Check out the lowrance local website. They have something of this sort but it is very expensive. I would rather just go with a front tow hitch if you can.

My dad recently installed a mover on his caravan, it operates on both the rear wheels and steers by moving the wheels separately. Not sure that this would work on a boat trailer due to the rear of the trailer going into the ocean, but will surely give a lot more traction than pulling on the towbar/jockey wheel. This setup does work very well on pavement and grass and is able to climb moderate curbs and the like.

Front tow hitch on your vehicle, or mount a winch against the wall or in the ground at its parking spot and winch it in to its parking.
