    Default Turbo whistle

    Hi

My friend drives a neat Defender tdi. It creates a very loud turbo whistle when the turbo spools up. I have listened carefully to the engine at idle and I hear nothing amiss. Power is good and the problem has not got worse.

    Leaking intercooler?

Can we leave it or should t be checked out?

My Td5 turbo is dead quiet.

    Thanks.

1st check the piping on the intercooler for loose clamps and leakage....if the problem still persists you need to check the intercooler radiator...if it it is whistling or wheezing sound you hearing it means the turbo system is loosing boost pressure and engine doesn't operate at full power capacity....
If the turbo needs to be serviced or overhauled there should be excess oil deposits in the intercooler piping from turbo to intake....

Not necessarily my 300Tdi has always whistled.

The exhaust system, if free flow or no silencers, will make it more prominent.

Check the waste-gate actuator isn't rusted and stuck open a little, could be losing pressure constantly. Had this on my Td5 and didn't even know till I saw a youtube video and checked.

I doubt it, the waste gate rarely works on the 300Tdi.
    He said power is good.

I'd say if it was like that then it's just like mine, whistle for the day I got her.

    Hi Darron

Was the whistling always there? If it started recently then it is a sign that something changed. I once had a very dirty air filter which choked the system and caused the turbo to whine / whistle when under load. Then another case, a friend had his tdi turbo overhauled by a company and when fitted, it whistled like crazy. The turbo place insisted there is a leak or problem somewhere else. We replaced the reconned turbo with a new one and problem solved so clearly the tolerances were not done properly by the turbo place.
I agree with some of the posts here though that some tdi turbo's do whistle slightly but it should not be overwhelming.

    Listen to this one:
My amarok was also very quiet from a turbo whistle perspective, and then JohnBoy from this forum did a decat for me. Ever since i get a lot of turbo whistle, even at idle to some extent, so I agree with the above sentiment.
