    Default 2.2 Smoke at night

    Hi all,

So I noticed this on my old triton as well, but when I drive at night especially with a car behind me I can see the bakkie throw quite a bit of what looks like smoke to me especially when accelerating from stand still. In the day nothing is visible. Also seems to be worse with 50ppm compared to 10ppm.

The smoke is not necessarily thick but it does look like quite a cloud of thin smoke.

    Anyone know what this is?

It's normally just a stream of heat vapour opposed to smoke.
I remember my Defender did it as well.

Agree, had a Hilux I could see it clearly with, especially if you have a side exit exhaust

all diesels do this, especially on acceleration. In normal operation diesels run very lean (hence the great fuel consumption), on acceleration they run richer creating more particulates. You usually do not see it in the day because the particles are tiny, but at night its visible in the headlights of the car behind you. As the engine gets older it tends to get worse.

If your 2.2 smokes at night, tell it to have some balls and smoke in front of you.

Nicorette may also help your 2.2

    Very important:

    1. Color of smoke
    2. Does it dissipate quickly

I noticed this on my Ranger too.

I think it's purely a case that the lights behind you are lighting up some particles that you cannot see in day light.

I had the same on my Ranger black smoke better, white smoke I will recommend to have the injectors checked for safety mine ended up in engine failure.

    Thanks to everyone who replied.

Here is a video of mine after the engine had run up to normal opetating temps. You can see the smoke and how quick it dissipates. So the general consensus seems to be dont worry about it?

Yes that's correct, I always open my door or window to hear the snorkel and turbo make the coolest sounds when shutting the car off lol
