Best pegs for West Coast soft sand

If it if fabric rally with steel pipes what is the damage if the pegs do not work? If it is aluminum construction what is the damage and cost?

In my experience fabric with steel pipes cost is minimal. I saw what happens when aluminum awning/rally flips over (in Bloem). It is destroyed.

Worth to consider when trying to figure out what to use/how much to spend.

Straight pegs are only used if you have tent floor or instead of roof nails on ground cover. Useless on ropes. Those "L pegs" in correct angle work.

Rubber hammer is useless. I refuse to use such. We have home made steel 1 to 2 kg. That works minus those rock hard grounds where even drill has an issue.

We were 6 weeks on East and West coast. L pegs worked every time. No extra wind ropes, nets - nothing. Xporer has good frame for the "rally". With the road van having rally we had to use wind rope. Always only L shape. It has only 3 upright poles and no frame

There are 2 types of L shape. Post 7 has the straight type. Post 5 has small bend just above the label. Sometimes that bend is substantially more. Those with a bend can be real pain to get to hard ground. We have both types to use

Eish, a full set of those including for the awning will cost half what my tent did! Sand bags will set you back less than R100 for a very big set.

Sandbags are a good idea... you can make them yourself out of any strong bags. Rocks on pegs are okay... if you can find the right size rocks. A stick planted sideways under the sand with the tent rope tied to the middle of it works well... if you can find the right size sticks.

A nice hint non the less about how much better a steel hammer is for pegs than rubber. I borrowed a rubber hammer once and nearly got klapped in the face by the "recoil" of the hammer - it was hard soil.

Coming back to the topic at hand, buried sand bags are hard to beat, and cheap. But it is far too much PT, at least for me. The L shaped pegs are relatively cheap, last forever, quick and easy to hammer in and pull out, and work well in soft sand.

I'm going to weld my L type pegs to the back of a piece of angle iron to give more resistance in sandy and soft almost muddy type soil.

I made myself a couple of these. They work very well in sand. Even use them in the beach. I have a drawing that I can mail anyone interested. Then you mail it to your local laser cutting shop to cut and bend. Mine was cut from 3cr12 stainless steel. Worked out about R25 eachAttachment 607570

Any heavy duty pegs each embedded in an empty 20 litre tin filled with concrete which was allowed to set.
Just heavy to handle. (ha ha).

Wooden pegs about 25x75x600mm

Even bury chunks of firewood anchored with conventional pegs supporting them.

Wide angle aluminium pegs.

I know this perfectly well BUT when you travel on west coast and you think that all is soft sand and you kit for that and then the next moment you stay in a place with hard ground - what then. It happens. Steel hammer is always good. Rubber not. In soft sand you can use either one of the L peg types but on hard ground you battle with one type.

I do not take bottle of brandy only. I take also bottle of whiskey. Be prepared.

For HARD ground ..... Take your cordless drill, make holes through the upper (hard) layer then insert peg and use the steel mallet to complete.
OK, off topic I know, but just saying.

For deep, soft and particularly, DRY sand the sandbags with the large heavy duty "L" shaped pegs are probably the solution.
Rocks / stones are not necessarily always around in deep sand areas.

Been there, done that, got the t shirt, worn it out. Never had a problem. Doubled and tripled up on L pegs on the windward side at times though which should be the back of the tent with the awning and entrance in the lee. Unless you want to use a 4x4 vacuum cleaner to remove the sand from the inside. Aerodynamics also tends to help in that position.

What is the best way to use them - fasten guy ropes around them maybe in combination with a peg?

Some practical advice on how to attach them would be great!


Store owner says he sells a lot of them? Maybe its the heavy rains and floods - Richtersveld etc!

Fill sand bag and tie closed. Dig hole for sand bag. Use guy rope end to tie onto sand bag, bury sand bag. If you don't know how to tie a release knot, then stab a L shape or normal tent peg behind the sand bag tie off through the bag and attach guy rope through tent peg. Bag will hold tent peg.

I am from the West Coast and what I learnt in the Sandveld is that LOONNGG pegs work. These ones with the spring helps absorbing some of the shock on the guy ropes when the wind is blowing, especially this time of the year when it is really windy...

If you camp in sandy spots, the only real workable solution is long pegs and drive them into the ground at an angle.
