    Default Calvinia Camping

Can anyone recommend a nice camping spot not far from Calvinia, it can be quite rustic too.

Don't know if it still exists, but try Klipwerf Rest Camp in town, camping and self-catering.

    Klipwerf is my regular spot.
    Private Ablutions are always spotless.
Overnighted (RTT camping) there several times over the past 5 years.

There is not much else in the area - are you staying for long?

For an overnighter Klipwerf is great.

I had a funny experience one night at Klipwerf. As we all know rain is not something which you often experience in Calvinia, yet we did the night we stood there. The nice hard surface turned into a very slippery affair to the extent that I had to select 4x4 to get the Cruiser and trailer out!

Klipwerf is very noisy being on the main road, Kleinplasie could be described as rustic.

Francois, that's a characteristic of the Karoo soil as it's clay. It's the reason the dirt roads become so rutted after rain. The soil turns to a slippery clay and vehicle tyres rut it. When the sun dries it, it's as hard as concrete and the ruts remain moulded in until a grader can remove them.

I have come to expect icy weather at Calvinia.

Last year September there was a cold front and the Calvinia Mountains were blanketed in thick snow - first time I had seen this. I had ice on the clamshell RTT and struggled at first to push it up. There was ice on the car in the morning. Temp was said to be minus 2C. The previous year it was -7C we had a chalet but were still very cold.

You can also experience strong winds in the area.

Thanks all. I saw Klipwerf and Kleinplasie in my searches and emailed Kleinplasie yesterday because it seemed a little more out of town which I like. If it's a good place I will go with that.
