Secondhand Bakkie advise needed

Hello Everyone

I am a 25 years old bachelor and looking to buy my first bakkie and was hoping this forum will provide me with some valuable advise.

I do live in the city so my vehicle will mostly be used to drive to the office and back home, but I do like to go hunt, fish, camp and to the farm over weekends/holidays.

What I am looking for:
1) Reliable bakkie, which won't cost me an arm and a leg to run and maintain (Maintenance & Service, Diesel and Insurance)
2) I would prefer a 2017 - 2018 model, with low millage (<100,000km)
3) Comfortable to ride, because will mostly be used in the city
4) I don't want to struggle to drive 120km/h on the highway and needs to pass other vehicles without to much trouble
5) Double cab, but not sure if I should consider an Extended cab?
6) Brands I am looking at: Amarok, Hilux, Isuzu and Ford
7) Budget: R250,000 - R300,000

Any advise will be much appreciated

Taking into consideration points 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 your best option is an Isuzu D-Max/KB 250.

That is all I can afford at this stage and my father advised I should not go older than 5 years. These requirements are the reason why I was wondering if I should consider an extended cab.

The Mahindra Double cab, is R322k new out the box.


If you push them for a discount, you'll get one for under 300.

If you go for a demo model, you might get the higher spec one for that price.


These bakkies are tough as nails and surprisingly comfortable.

I have an Isuzu KB 250 4x4. No frills, very basic but it has all I need. If you wait around and the right one comes along close to your price range, that would be my suggestion.

The Isuzu prices have gone up like crazy. My brother bought a demo 2019 Isuzu KB 250/D-Max D/C with less than 20000km on last year for R30000, the same bakkies are now over 400k.

How about a brand new double cab for R317k? I have the previous 4x4 model from 2011. Excellent warranty service and it's been used as a work bakkie carting sand, stone, cement, tar poles, bricks and coal. No problems except for headlights and a temperature gauge fixed under warranty. They have dealerships in SA and are established. Made by a consortium of Ford and Isuzu.

Hi, welcome.

Your budget is a bit low for your requirements. Probably only a 2.2 extended cab or if you search far a double cab. Some ford's of late, and i repeat some, before the forum eats me, have of late had some reliability issues, but if it's 201-2018 it will still have a warranty at least.

I would have a look at the Mahindra too, the toyota's, isuzu & amaroks will be way out of budget.

If you are willing to look at single cab you will be able to buy a brand new Mahindra Pik Up S6 in 4x4 after discount. It has a big cabin if you were wondering.

4 years or 120k KM warranty.
90k KM service plan.
4 years roadside assist.

It is also packed with features:
Auto headlights/ wipers
Cruise control
Bluetooth touch screen head unit
Height adjustable driver seat with arm rest.
Electric mirrors/ windows/ petrol flap
etc.

The engine and gearbox combo is superb. There is more than enough power/ torque available to cruise at high speed without needing to change gears to maintain momentum when unladen.
Can really carry a load.
Is fuel efficient.
Is reliable.

I am driving my second Mahindra and have put these vehicles through the wringer. Never once did I even think they would let me down.

For up to 300K, you can get a decent xtra cab Hilux with less than 100K km and also around 2018 model.

For the same money you can get a 3.2 Auto Double Cab Ford Ranger.

I know that the Mahindra is good bakkies, but not a bakkie I see myself driving. (The looks are not to my liking)

I think the advise I got was that I need to wait a year or two until I can increase my budget.
